newbie: oil & coolant levels

Post by anditsoundslikebells » Wed Oct 27, 2021 7:55 pm

simple and newbie questions.

any tricks to know how much coolant to put in? I struggle to see the liquid at the ridge.
This look good?
What would happen if it were overfilled?

also, can someone tell me the amount of oil that will differentiate between the min & max ie how much I will need to put in to get to max?

If oil on minimum (Engine cold) I add about 1 litre. But I check on dipstick after first half litre has gone in. I aim for mid to top of the perforation section of the dipstick. Don’t forget to allow some time for the oil to get to the sump. Definitely don’t want to overfill with oil.
Coolant I aim for the ridge. But I have been known to overfill slightly. As you say it can be difficult to see the level.
From your photo I would remove some.

Ok Alex. I am not sure if there is a overflow pipe on the coolant. Obviously the coolant will expand when it gets hot. The book says to the ridge. I tend to go with Audi recommendations.
Just looking at your photo again. Is that a overfill pipe on top of the reservoir ?

I think mine is close enough to the ridge to pass.
Sounds like a logical place for an overflow?

The overflow is the cap, if the system over pressurizes the valve in the cap releases the pressure and coolant all over the top of the header tank.
