Roof/Water Leak

Post by jonnyball » Tue Oct 05, 2021 5:34 pm

Afternoon All,

Anyone come across an issue with rain water coming in near the interior lights below the sunroof please? I noticed some water coming through last month took it to a local garage and asked them to sort. They said it was just clearing the drainage area near the sunroof and all sorted. Today, I was enjoying the drive, turned right (always on a right turn) when water came out again!! Lights work and lining is not damaged or holding water..just very irritating (particularly if in the passenger seat)!

Any quick, easy fix that you folks have spotted for this please?

Cheers

I’ve got this with mine at the moment-there’s a gap between the seal at the back/centre of the sunroof think it’s coming from there

This rings a very vague bell. Seem to remember a case of this a long time ago. Maybe it was coming in through the GPS antenna and running along the wires to the interior light.

The sunroof drains down the A-pillar IIRC and it can get blocked.

Aha. That is good to know, will look at both the antenna and a-pillar as potential cause. Appreciate the fast response!

Hi Jonny
Common thing on all Vag group cars is where the sunroof drains attach to the sunroof they have a white collar that goes onto the sunroof frame then the drain pipe plugs into it. What happens is the glue that bonds them together goes off and they come apart.
What we do with them is glue them back onto the pipes and push them all the way home on the sunroof frame. You’ll need to drop the headliner to get to them.
What does also happen as well is when people clean the drains sometimes they just put an air line down them and that blows the drain off slight causing it leak as well.
Hope this helps.

That is really helpful and makes sense. Is this a quick and inexpensive fix? Slightly concerned that I have to take the headliner off...

You will definitely need to release it and you might be able to fiddle around and do it but just be careful not to crease your headliner. We just generally release them enough so we can get in there. The rears are always a crap to do but you might just get away with the fronts as thats where your problem is.

Had this same problem, couple of drips coming from the interior light cluster above centre consul.
If you take the boot light cluster out you can just see the roof antenna, pour some water all around the antenna and see/feel if water is coming in. New seal and sorted, easy job.

Wanted to thank you all for the advice on this one. Leak is fixed. Checked the antenna and dropped the headlining by the sunroof, accessed the drain pipe. They were slightly misaligned, water was coming through so re-sealed and clipped them to ensure no more leak. Headlining back on and bobs your uncle!
