Major bill coming my way advise needed

Post by NC5RS6owner » Thu Jul 22, 2021 1:42 pm

Hello everyone recently purchased a C5 RS6 2003 Milege 130,000 loads of service history etc drove perfectly however Monday gone started idling all over , brakes were solid just didn’t feel safe to drive etc smoke coming out of one exhaust pipe more than the other
So I booked it into Awesome GTI today for diagnosis and was advised they need to take out full engine which is £900. That includes 12 hours at least of labour, now I’ve only had this car a month bought through a dealer, have got onto them and explained that obviously I’m in Manchester and there in Oxfordshire so it’s my choice to pay that amount to get too the bottom of this problem, however anything more then is there any of the bill that can be paid on there behalf as surely there’s still a warranty with the car as per sale, waiting for a response regarding that ? I asked
So this was the write up I got Road tested vehicle to find once back in it misfired , then scanned to find multiple faults for misfire across different cylinders, once started up it smoked a lot and revved higher than normal suspect running on its own oil , I removed engine cover to see all vac lines are very old and perished which could have contributed to the fault once vehicle in the air removed turbo outlet pipe which a cup of oil came out, which leads me to believe the turbos are faulty causing oil to pass the seals and into the intake, to be 100% sure this is the issue we would have to remove the Turbos and inspect which would mean the engine coming out suspect a sensor our servo faulty for the brake issue but would require more time to inspect fully recommend not driving the vehicle.

So that’s what was stated in the diagnostic review, any help regarding any of this would be appreciated it’s going in on the 9th august absolutely gutted no car until at least a week after that date as they have said 2 days work , so can someone give me a best case scenario and a worse case price wise as I’ve heard this can get scary 😟 so this was so long winded, hopefully someone will take the time to help a new owner thanks Barry

Take car to Unit20 as a respected RS6 specialist.

The dealer is obliged to give a limited warranty, although these have many get-out clauses when you read the small print - but certainly call and discuss the problem with them. Try talking calmly to them explaining symptoms and diagnosis.

Echo the above re unit 20.
However How long have you had the car and what price did you pay.
Will the seller take it back. If not what warranty came with it.

It’s barely drivable to be honest, and I wouldn’t feel safe going as far as unit 20 driving that is I’ve had it a month, car came with loads and loads of service history guy before me had it 5 years spent loads on the upkeep etc, so just waiting on a call back from the dealer really and regarding warranty will just be your standard garage warranty as per sale it was £13k

The car (any car) must be ‘fit for purpose’ when a dealer sells it. Ignore the whole ‘1 month/3 month’ warranty pish you get from them-check your consumer rights. Have had this a couple of times and just make them aware of it. They will try and fob you off as they don’t want to pay out. Unless you’ve done something to the car they have to by law take it back. You can also legally reject the car.
Follow the legal process and there is nothing they can do.

As per above comments thanks for your replies as per being polite, the dealer has got back to me and stated that they will foot the bill even if it’s turbos etc just to get in touch before carrying out any work etc, but there happy to pay it, so Stevo you are correct my friend 👍

Sounds like a decent dealer if they haven't even put up a fight over any of this. They should be applauded as most dealers only get a bad rap, you rarely hear of the good ones !

Fingers crossed you get this sorted :-)

From start to finish he’s been bang on in all honesty, as stated the previous owner spent £4K on various parts tyres etc yes you could say the mileage is high but it is 18 years old, but if you seen it there’s no way you would think so, he didn’t even argue I think they know who the wool pullers are, and as stated if your ok with them, there the same back , fortunately I didn’t buy privately as I wouldn’t have a leg to stand on regarding the potential of the turbos on there way out, it will be even better once repaired

Send it to unit 20 and get them to explain to the dealer what needs doing. Then give the dealer the option of paying or taking it back.

Unit20 can arrange a transporter to get the car there (we'll, they always used to)
Sounds like it could just be your vacuum lines though.

Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

Will give them a call in the morning, as you all have more experience regarding faults on these models than I can only dream about , it was just panicking me having to drive it there, but if the transportation can be arranged then I would go for that , as really want it sorting before the 9th August as that’s way off, and hopefully it will be cheaper to take the engine out if that’s what it needs

Unit 20 is definitely the right place for these cars.
I won’t go anywhere else. Even though it’s a 350 mile round trip with occasional stop overs.

Just had a very interesting conversation with Grizz/Martin at Unit 20 he said it’s not a engine out job atall, it’s the brake booster valve, £30 part and about 8 hours labour so Awesome GTI are either trying to pull my pants down our haven’t a clue, either way thanks to the folks on here I will now be going to Unit 20 when he has a slot to fit me in will transport it down there, said will call me next week with a date so fingers crossed that will be sorted way before the 9th August and there will be no engine out etc again thank you regarding pointing me in the right direction Barry
