Handbrake cable and adjuster

Post by srichards » Thu Jun 24, 2021 8:59 am

The adjusters are apparently knackered on my handbrake cables. Audi cables are NLA. Does anyone know which of the following that are actually looking like they're available come with the adjusters?

https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-br ... html#10106

Or is there another good place to get two sets as I'm thinking I'll need some in another 15 years and can do without the hassle...

Can’t they adjust it at the handbrake leaver itself??

Lever adjustment alone is rarely enough. You usually need to set it at the caliper end as well. It would also mean if the cable lengths had to be slightly different there wouldn't be a way of doing it as I don't think the handbrake lever has independent adjustment for each cable. I'm assuming it only has a total adjustment.

I've always had handbrakes that have to be adjusted at both ends. If it's only done at one then they end up hard to use or you have to lift the lever so high it's comical.

Worst case, "the forum" might need to commission to have a few sets custom made. I know Speedy Cables can do this, they used to make the handbrake cables for my Ultima I think.

What the issue exactly? Seized cable? Or the caliper?

If it's the cable I would take a punt on some 4B0 609 721AD and try to get them to work.

Adjusters buggered apparently. It's not the calipers as both have been replaced including one a couple of months ago.

Does 4B0 609 721AD come with adjusters?

What are you calling "the adjuster"?

Don't know. The garage just said the 'adjuster' had failed and said something about needing new cables and feeding it through something and the something had failed. I don't know whether they mean the adjuster on the 3 year old caliper has failed already or that there is some other adjuster system as well. The other caliper is a couple of months old.

It can't be the cables as they seem to be available so it has to be something else they mean.

The adjuster is part of the cable. You can see it here:

Maybe they just don't know how to reset the adjuster? Who's doing it?

I thought the adjuster was part of the cable as well. Going to order the Bosch ones off Autodoc anyway. Can't have too many spares.

I'd think they'd know how to reset the adjuster as they're a VAG specialist I've used for years. They're pretty clued up usually.

Which one? Can you link to what you buy and let us know how it goes?

I searched on the part number and ordered the cable with that part number. Now the autodoc system says it's not compatible.

The AD suffix? It's for a A6 quattro. Closest one I could find.
