Oil leak.

Post by steve2003rs6 » Sun Apr 18, 2021 8:38 pm

Moved the car off the drive this morning and noticed a small oil leak.
Checked all oil levels and the power steering reservoir on minimum. So I think the leak is power steering fluid.
Checked all around the reservoir and everything was dry.
I had the hoses replace 2-3 years ago which was a pain as engine was manoeuvred out of the way to get at them.
At unit 20 next month so will see what can be done and to confirm that initial diagnosis is correct.
In a sadistic way I hope it’s engine out. That will allow me to do quite a bit of preventative maintenance on my bucket list.

Check gearbox for leaks as well. I had a seal go just after I had the oil changed so they got to do it again a few months after the first time.

Gearbox transfer box output flange is common. You need to figure out approximately where the stain is in relation to the engine. Front / back? Left / right?

Thank you for the responses guys.
Oil leak appears to be coming from front of engine right hand side (near side). I think it’s power steering fluid.
Booked in for diffs, xfer box and gearbox oil and filter next month and advised them of oil leak
Leak seems to have got worse after topping up the reservoir.
Had this leak for quite some time. Initially it was a 50p size oil mark but is now unacceptable and quite a bit larger oil stain.
Hope we can get it sorted. It’s making a mess of the new driveway.

Been looking under the car again. Leak could be coming from under the sump pan area.
Had a new pan fitted last year when we did several gearbox oil and filter changes.
Need to get it up on a ramp and look further to try and identify where it is coming from.
