Good news corner

Post by IchBautAuto » Sun Mar 14, 2021 5:16 am

21 years of audi ownership and most of that with 3 or 4 audi concurrently. A miserly 8 years of RS ownership mostly running two RS cars. In that time I have read a library of owner comments on Forums based in the UK, Europe and the US. The common thread has been, Luv the car, but I have this list of issues, too expensive to own / maintain / drive and parts are rolled gold etc etc. You've all seen them. I've posted plenty here about problems, advice sought on how to fix them and much the same as you read everywhere. Some hardly put up any miles and maybe that has a lot to do with the issues that surface.

In the spirit of euphoria I thought that a little corner should be established where good news stories about the C5 RS6 could live. An Audi is my daily driver and has been for 21 years, currently the RS6 fills that role. They have been the most reliable car I have ever owned and not really much more expensive to keep on the road, as all are from the same family B5 / C5 and have a lot of similarity / commonality in design, construction and parts.

So, 1500 Km into a road trip of a knats less that 3000Km overall. Daily temps 35 Deg C. I have come across the ghosts of the ancestor of horsepower

The use of wire mesh really does the trick when you see these in the fog or low light.

Found the end of summer bugs by the millions. While the grills look a little splattered, the radiators and intercoolers were caked with well done carcasses.

Noting the Daniel Craig links with the RS6 in Layer Cake and his association with 007, I found this remarkable grave out in the country of a man who is reputed to be one of the Flemming inspirations for the original 007.

Happy cruising and maybe we can entice a few more satisfied owners who can debunk the myths of owning and driving a C5 RS6.

Brilliant read.
I have had mine since 2012 at 47 K miles. Now on 112 K miles. Has always been my daily driver. Never been garaged (sadly).
So far the only car I have owned that has never let me down.
Always starts first time. Gets me to wherever I want to go in comfort. And more importantly back home again.
Yes I Have had a few minor issues. Yes I have spent a fair bit maintaining and improving the car.
I think it says a lot when I say that I love every minute of driving the car.
When I park up and exit. I still have to look back and admire the car after 9 years of ownership.
A while ago shopp made a comment. Look after the little things before they become big issues.
That resonated with me so I will attempt to do just that.
Now having tempted fate hope the car continues to behave.

Great read. Despite a lot of reading I hadn't yet come across that thread. What's amazing is that 12 years on, the same car still engenders the same general thoughts. Maybe I for one am stuck in a time warp.

I love these cars, there is nothing else that ticks the box. I’m sat in a brand new A6 s line at work and it doesn’t feel the same at all. Too clinical.

The only thing I would replace mine with is a two seater jag or Aston

Shopp still wants to know how to rename the thread to "The Joy of Six" though.

Car in for MOT this morning. Passed with no advisories. Not bad for a 18 year old car. Very very happy with that.
However I noticed that two or three bulbs were out on the third brake light.
AMD advised that a new light is nla. But they still sell spare bulbs. Ordered 10 and will replace all of them.
Also made me smile when I saw the rear fog light switched on while the MOT was being done.
Brought back memories of when I first bought the car.
When I checked it over I noticed that the near side rear fog light wasn’t working.
Straight to AMD who informed me it wasn’t supposed to work. It was purely for cosmetics.

Little trip completed and back home to do a major cleanup. Not only bugs but a bit of water in the boot too. My fault.... I use what is known as a sun cap to keep a bit of heat out of the cabin, it secures with a flap that is held by the boot seal. On the return trip we had a bit of excess rain that flooded a lot of the eastern coast, plus a second trough that did the same for the inland. Stopped for the night, put the cap on as it was quite hot, then the rain arrived and in the ensuing running around, forgot to remove the suncap. Over the next few days with up to 600 mm of rain around us, the cover wicked a bit of water into the boot. Luckily stuff in the boot absorbed most of the water and the carpet only got damp.
suncap.jpg
We got to spend a few extra days waiting for the water to go down and the roads to open.
river up.jpg
Otherwise, success. Critical stats:
Insects various imbedded over the car - Thousands
Distance covered - 2950 Km
Fuel used - 351.19 Ltr
Avg consumption - 11.9 Ltr / 100 Km
Stone chips - a few
Bird strike - One
Oil consumption - Nil
Fault codes - Nil

Happy to report a totally trouble free trip, a mix of weather with part in temperatures of 36 degree C or more, part in rain, Some excellent highway, some "C" grade roads and all in between with the usual expected level of comfort throughout.

I have put about 15,000 Km on the Bilstein B8 suspension over all types of roads at various speeds and I can say that it is a supremely suitable option for this car on any roads.

Well that must be the easiest job to do on a Rs6.
3rd brake light bulbs x10 arrived on Saturday.
3 bulbs were dead but replaced all 10 of them. Took about 10 mins. Wish every job was that simple.

Ichbautauto. Like you I love the bilsteins. Totally transformed my car.
Most roads where I live are crap at best. And the bilsteins are very comfortable. On the motorway they are a sheer pleasure.
However I cannot compare to original suspension as I have never driven one with DRC.

Likewise I've never driven working DRC but I'm of the view that mechanical suspension is a fairly simple beast. Assuming good bushes and correct alignment, if you have the right spring rates and you control the spring oscillation with appropriate damping then there is no magic dust that makes one system stunningly better than another. We know that Ohlins, Koni, Bilstein etc made their name on this principle and it's really the level of adjustability that makes one preferrable over another.
