There are 2 circuits in the BLS. Brake lights coming on doesn’t necessarily mean both circuits are working.

Audi change the design of the BLS every six months. One of these days they’ll get it right.

One circuit in the BLS goes to the ECUs the other to the brake lights VIA THE F125 SWITCH!
(The two operate a fraction of a millimetre apart as can be seen when monitoring via VCDS and pressing the pedal down VERY VERY slowly.)

And then there's the "Gear recognition signal" error which is also almost always an F125 issue.

So, the jury is out at present but if the problem is still there I'd be thinking F125 problem, possibly damage/debris inside it's a horrible mechanical device. :FIREdevil:

I noted it was a 4 terminal switch, just wasn’t sure whether it was a two circuit switch or something more complicated still. Anyway, no warning light yet, and an easy fit.

If you take one apart (surprisingly easy) it's two totally separate circuits.
One just carries a very small current to signal to the ECUs, the other takes the full current to power the brake lights so can easily get burnt/corroded.
There's no relay on the brake lights, it's a direct circuit.

New boot gas struts arrived as they were not doing much - they hadn't totally failed but were not really supporting the weight of the bootlid. Easy to replace , just need a narrow screwdriver to prise the spring clip out of its locking position. New Struts 4B5 827 552G. Came in Febi bags but they were marked Stabilus as per originals. Bought from Ebay £ 28.99 per pair.

Radio removal keys and parking chime also arrived but as its more dismantling will leave that until the next free weekend.

Yeah, my tailgate has struts failed from lack of use. It’s unbelievably heavy without assistance.

Today I changed the front parking sensor chime.

To do it you need to remove the radio, HVAC controls, ashtray, but also the front centre console, hazard switch panel, and that requires removing armrest and moving the rear section of the centre console / handbrake surround back a couple of inches as well.

Quite time consuming - took me 3 hrs start to finish, but not difficult. If you've pulled the interior apart before, you'll do it quicker. Technique as per Elsawin, altough multiple different chapters to refer to.

Tools required - a set of radio keys, a 13mm spanner or small socket for the armrest and rear console fixing screw, an 8mm socket, a Phillips screwdriver (chime itself and upper corners of hazard panel) and a T25 torx bit (radio cage). You'll also need the code for your radio.

The chime, on a RHD 2003 Saloon is to the right of the hazard switch / cupholder panel, behind some heater ducting to take air to the rear centre console.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Fortunatley the parking sensors now work (phew), and everything else disturbed or dislodged also works. (double phew).

Just in case you need the radio code, https://www.radiocodeking.co.uk/audi-radio-codes/ is offerig it for free by just entering this voucher code: freeaudicode while you are in the checkout section. I managed to sort my daughter's Ford radio with it and it works.

Hope it helps!

Thanks. Mother in law could remember the code, so I've made a note of it.

Next job is to change the F125 switch - one arriving in the next day or so.

Think I might have to do mine again. Done less than 1000 miles since the last one. :-/
