Cam Belt Plus Chain ?
Cam Belt Plus Chain ?
It's coming up to that time when I think I need to seriously look at getting the belt replaced.
Going by my history, it looks about 4.5 years since it was last done and I don't see any listings of tensioners in the bill, which I noticed from another thread are super important !
Also looking through the guides I started looking at the Cam Chain guide and was wondering weather this is something I should also be looking at doing at the same time ? I notice occasionally when you blip the throttle from idle there appears to be a very slight rattle, which I guess could be a chain ? I've seen in other threads people posting about this also, so it never really bothered me since there didn't appear to be much worry from anyone about it.
Is there anything to look out for ? Anything to worry about ? Do it for peace of mind ?
And on a totally different side of things, I see nothing at all in my history about having the diff oil changed. With about 130k miles now and using it every single day, is this something I should also be looking at doing ? Or are they bulletproof ?
As always, any advice is much appreciated

They all do that slight rattle at 1200rpm.
I’d change the diff oil. It’s easy to do and low cost. Do the transfer box, too.

Good post.
I will get my diff and transfer box done.
As far as I know mine has never been done and currently on 115 K miles. Cambelt due next year.

Re: Cam Belt Plus Chain ?
Appreciate the advice. Are there any signs to look for with the Cam chain/tensioner ? Or something I shouldn't ever need to worry about ?
Is there a specific type of Oil for the diff ? I'm guessing it would also need gaskets etc.... Service pack available at all by any chance ?
Re: Cam Belt Plus Chain ?
Definitely keep an ear out for it getting worse. Also check the dephasing with the Vagcom occasionally to make sure you are getting 22-26 degrees dephasing when driving.
Get the oils from Audi / VW. It's expensive but there isn't much of it.

The most annoying thing on mine is just occasionally when it's been sitting for ages, whatever lifters have been sitting "valve open" drain fully down and can stick slightly until everything warms up. The lesson being to drive the thing slightly more occasionally, only happens if I leave it for a long time.

Sorry to jump in here but was there someone on the site that would hire out the tools for doing the timing belt ?...mine due aswell so going to have a go myself, don't see any problems as long as i have the right tools.
Re: Cam Belt Plus Chain ?
Same. I’ll be starting mine tomorrow after months standing. I know it’ll sound horrible. The tappets won’t fully fill for a good few minutes.Mɐʇʇ wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 2:13 pmThe most annoying thing on mine is just occasionally when it's been sitting for ages, whatever lifters have been sitting "valve open" drain fully down and can stick slightly until everything warms up. Yes, im sure the info is in the stickies on the C5 page, unfortunately i dont have the time or real mad skillz to do a V8, never tried one before... just completed an alternator, starter, tensioner, pulley and serpentine belt change on a Cooper S, technically im a mechanical god after working on one of those bastards, but i want mine done right

After the above convo I went out and fired my car up today for the first time in maybe 3 months. Started on the button, as you'd expect with it being kept on the trickle charger. Shame the roads are still salty and wet, it deserves a drive.
