ABS fault

Post by Gregstv » Thu Jan 07, 2021 4:40 am

Hi guys,
The ABS fault appeared again today. It's been good for weeks but I have been waiting for it. It happened when I hit full lock in the work car park. Would of only been doing 5kph. One thing it's always done is shutter when on full lock and moving slow. It is the same shutter that you get from a LSD when turning and the diff clutches shutter. Is this normal on the RS6?
I will replace the wheels sensors and check the wiring under the front gaurds next to try and Chace down the ABS problem.

Yeah, that unpleasant grinding judder is "normal". At least, they all do it.

Fingers crossed it's just a sensor / wiring problem.

Found the wheel sensors off the spares car. Fitted them and noticed my break pads don't have wear sensors. The spares car does. The change pads light is now on. I have two options, swap the pads, the pads look near new on both so that should be ok I think, or I just cut the connector off and short the wires together like the one I removed. Anyone been through this?

I would just buy a new pad sensor. They are dead cheap. Or if you don't need the idiot light to remind you when to change pads, you could just short it.

Agreed. I'd try and keep as much of the standard setup as possible unless it's flawed. Just think of the next guy, or indeed yourself when older, wondering if this is like the manual or has it been hacked around and you have all the extra work to figure out whats changed.

Changed both wheel sensors on the front. The pads on the spares car were like new and are Audi pads. Fitted them and hooked up the wear sensors. Cleared the ABS fault and went for a drive. No ABS light. Hopefully it's fixed, only time will tell.
The Audi pads feel much better than the ones that were on it. No brand on the ones I removed either.

Just cleaned the old PDS and found a brand. They are Ferodo HP. No where near as good as the Audi pads.

Yeah, they'll be the cheap pads made primarily from floor sweepings.

I guess the last owner got them cheap.
The breaks are that much better I will hold off fitting the C6 setup for now.

Well it didn't last long. ABS light again. Cleared it 3 times and didn't even get out of the driveway before it came on again. So I attacked the module. Pulled the pump motor apart, cleaned the brushes. Removed the electronic module and applied power to the pump motor and gave it a good run. Cleaned the contacts and put it all back together. Went for a drive and no problem. I just have to wait and see. It will not beat me.
