Re: Rear gearbox seal
I spotted this on another site a few months ago. It looks like a very good video and another job I’d like to try. Thanks for sharing.mavada wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 8:07 amHi all,

Re: Rear gearbox seal
The video shows quite well what's involved.
Couple of omissions IMO:
1. Doesn't say to support the drive shaft or you could damage the universal joint (in fact at the beginning he lets it hang under its own weight).
2. I don't like the tapping the seal in approximately. I made up a tool to push it in the correct distance. Not worth taking a risk, IMO, because the part where the seal used to sit on the flange will be perfectly smooth. If you don't put the seal in the same position, you will have the roughness of the flange surface which could prematurely wear the seal. This is especially true if you don't push it in enough since the exposed part of the flange will have corroded somewhat.
3. More of a style comment: I don't unbolt the exhaust mounts, just slip the exhaust of the rubber suspenders. Don't think it makes much difference either way.
I think there's a good how-to in the FAQ, too.

Re: Rear gearbox seal
Hi Ben,
So you made this tool (VAG T40105) yourself?
I cant find the "1.7mm rule " in the faq, which is, what you said, important.
I copied this piece of text;
"SEAL SHOULD ONLY BE PRESSED IN TO A DEPH OF 1.7MM, NOT AS FAR AS THE STOP (2.6 mm)"

Re: Rear gearbox seal
Thats cool.
So you are able to print parts for us then
As a start, like 20 inch rs4 alloys....

Re: Rear gearbox seal
No, you can print in loads of materials. I usually print in ABS, but I also use PETG a lot. I even have some flexible filament (TPU) for printing flexible parts like rubber washers but I haven't tried it yet.
Never liked PLA. Too weak and brittle for me since I only really use my printer for engineering parts, not ornaments.
My printer comes from your country, too.
This is the tool I made:
