If it's any consolation it made me chuckle.

I joined the bits coming out of the vents club last year. Thankfully didn’t last for long. And has been ok for a long while now.

@Chris - how did you get on with the headlining refurb? This is on my to do list, so any lessons learnt are helpful.

Just the one lesson. If you have young kids don’t expect to complete even a simple project within a reasonable time frame. 🤦‍♂️
I still haven’t found time to test fit the card with the extra think foam let alone stick the Alcantara back down. I’ll hopefully find time for this on Thursday or Friday. 👍

Me too. 5.5 year old twins here.

Managed to do the cam belt on the Mrs’ car today though, it was overdue.

Two boys here as well - 2 and 5. Although their hands are small enough to work in the engine bay, they lack the strength so at this point cannot help with maintenance!

I can’t decide what’s worse, not being able to get my arm down the gap to reach that elusive bolt or having to boys that can reach it but haven’t got the strength to turn it. I’ll be sending them to the mines soon if they don’t start pulling their weight.

The twins come and “help” me in the garage fairly regularly.

I always try to take time to explain what I’m doing, why it needs doing, how to do it, etc. Whether or not they ever turn a spanner doesn’t matter, but being inquisitive and always understanding not just what, but why and how, are important questions I see missing from young people these days.

I was reading this thinking my headliner is fine. Then yesterday I noticed it’s started to drop at the front too. So will be doing this over the winter. Maybe a how too re the adhesive as I will do it myself

@ 'Man-J' this is the one I followed on my MG. I will do the same technique on the RS : http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/in ... lining.htm

@Anyone
Have just checked the sample cards I have against the RS:
  • In "real" alcantara, it's Charcoal, code 6422
  • In Milano Suede,it's Dark Grey, code 620
The real alcantara is an exact match as far as my eyes can tell - however you'll need to add your own foam backing I suspect.
The milano is close, but not exact, both colour & texture wise, but available pre-backed with foam, more compliant/stretchable and half the price - for a headlining, I think it'd be fine, and also easier....but......if I replace the headlining in mine, I will stump for the real stuff for originality sake - I just put it it as a choice for people since if it's your first time having a go at this type of stuff - alcantara is an expensive way to learn if you're not 100% confident...

I’ve just finished gluing the Alcantara onto the foam. I’m relatively pleased with the result but there are a few areas that aren’t as good as I would have liked.

You can see a slight wrinkle here. The pictures make it look a lot worse than it is.

And the other issue is that I couldn’t pull the Alcantara tight enough over the length of the card meaning that by the time I had reached the rear the Alcantara had fallen short of lining up at the rear light hole by about 2mm. I’m hoping I’ve just about got away with it but if you look you can see that it doesn’t tuck nicely under the light fitting. And again there is a little wrinkle in the corner.

As a learning point I would recommend that you don’t attempt this by yourself, a second person would have been able to hold the Alcantara up at one end as you work tighten and push down as required.

I also decided to remove the carpet underlay and replace with the laminate underlay. I had hoped that the 10mm underlay would work but it was just too thick.

Mate I think that’s looks spot on personally. You should be pleased with that. I’m wondering if I could get away with a repair to mine and just re sticking the part that’s dropped in situ rather than complete removal. Having just done yours what your take on that
