Roof rail and window trim

Post by ChrisA » Sun Jul 05, 2020 3:11 pm

Hi guys

What’s the original finish of the roof rails and window trim? Can the be plated?
Mine, I’m sure like many others, is looking a bit mottled. It seems to be a VAG issue as the wife Skoda Superb has the same finish and no matter what I try I can’t clean it.

Cheers,
Chris.

It's brushed, anodised aluminium. You might be able to find a company to refinish it. It'd probably need to be acid etched then re-anodised. The water marks are annoying. It's almost like they are behind the anodising.

Maybe you could try to find a second hand set to do some experimentation on.

Cheers Shop.
I’ll be taking the roof bars off soon so will take them to a place where I get my zinc plating done and ask them if they can do it. There website does say the do “hard anodising”.

How do I remove the larger top trim around the windows?

As with all decorative finishes, the hard work is the prep.

I suspect that the trim will have to have to old anodising chemically stripped then the surface thoroughly cleaned and polished before applying a satin anodising process. I wonder if soft bead blast before anodising might give the desired satin effect.

Blasting aluminium before anodizing gives a great finish for about 30 sec then it picks up EVERYTHING and is a sod to clean due to the surface texture. A brushed or machined finish is much easier to keep looking tidy.

Macro are good for hard anodizing (they did my disc bells) and Metal Treatments round the corner are good for regular anodizing of stuff (i've had wheel centres plated, car parts and HiFi stuff anodized). Rick Conell (sp) on the same estate have bigger tanks if you need larger stuff doing, but you need an account for payment.

Lol. I didn’t know your forum name (or more likely forgot 😊)
