5HP24 A - ZF Service Kit

Post by Mɐʇʇ » Sun Dec 29, 2019 10:52 am

Just done a service on my box using the proper ZF service kit. For 116.09 GBP including delivery and Oil, it's a no-brainer to use this one compared to Audi or other aftermarket kits.
The service procedure is well documented elsewhere - so not going to cover it here other than a link to the ZF guide I scanned in - but hopefully some useful info.

Kit Part Numbers Instructions & Guides
These are the official ZF docs. Note that despite Audi saying sealed for life, ZF do specify servicing - for ALL the 5HP and 6HP gearboxes. Gave the sump a lick of paint while it was out. Bit of a quick and dirty job TBH, but want to stop it rusting. Will get a replacement powdercoated when I can find one.

The ZF Kit. Note that you get new magnets and sump plug included.

I remember someone asking some time back if Filtran filters are OK. Filtran is the filter that ZF use - must be OK.

It's well discussed that the 5HP24 A should have the short filter - but I couldn't find any measurement to confirm what the right filter length is.
20mm is the (right) number. 25mm is the wrong (long) number.
The gotcha is that the long filter will just fit in a short sump - but with no clearance. Although I've never actually seen a long filter - do they still even make them?

All bolted up and looking OK

Beautiful post. I'm gonna stick it in the FAQ.

And you have a spare sump for powder coating.
That’s what I call good timing ?

Totally. I had been patiently looking for one for quite a while.
However, when I switch over, I’ll then have my current one available for someone whose own one has rusted through. I will pay it forward. 😄

Just done another service. You need 8 litres, one more than in the kit.

And I made a tool

Matt.
The max amount of oil I have been able to get in is 5 litres.
Tried 4 times now. Even unit 20 maxed out at 5 litres.
Stopped worrying about it now. I just accept it.

Also a quick reminder.
When you replace the filter ensure that the o ring on the neck is a interference fit.

On one occasion I had the gearbox oil and filter changed.
When I got the car back the car was screaming. Back on the ramp at the garage. They said they couldn’t find anything wrong.
Drove to my mates and borrowed his 4 post ramp.
Drained gearbox oil
Removed sump
Removed filter
Was expecting to see a cracked filter as I know they are a bit fragile.
Or a “long filter” installed instead of the short one.

Nothing. So started to replace everything.
That’s when we noticed that the o ring on the filter neck was a clearance fit.
Bought another o ring and installed it on the filter.
After that the gearbox was sorted.
So everyone just be aware. And save yourselves a lot of time and effort. Double check that o ring before you bolt everything up.

And there’s 2 in the service kit that are similar. One is for the filter, one is for the sump bung. They are similar enough that you need to check which way round to put them

Matt iirc I posted the measurements on here somewhere.
If I said I was a bit annoyed with the garage that would be the understatement of the year.

Hate paying for a job to be done. Then having to do it yourself to get it done right.

So true. Which is why I do almost all of it myself. Makes apportioning blame much easier

Whereabouts is the filter bung? I recently changed the filter on mine, but didnt notice a bung in the old one.

I meant sump bung, not filter. Now edited.
