Wing mirror glass
Looking to replace the drivers door mirror glass. Astonished and amased that I was quoted £386:00.
That’s for glass and backing plate !
Can anyone advise a suitable alternative for a 2003 RS6.
Mirror isn’t broken but water has got into the outside protective layer and looks awful.

Re: Wing mirror glass
Probably because they are auto-dimming. You could just get standard A6 glass without the auto-dimming feature.
Daytona RS6 C5 Avant. Viper'd, Billies, Waggers, MTM box brain, C6 stoppers, xcarlink, R8 coolant cap (woohoo)

Re: Wing mirror glass
Wasn't there something about removing/ cutting the top layer to leave just the mirror, maybe that will resolve the water build up too?

Thanks guys. Will see if the outer layer can be removed.

This is almost certainly the way forward in future.........

Re: Wing mirror glass
Removed the glass from the casing today. Cannot see any way of removing the outer layer. So will have to grudgingly pay the £386:00 for a new one.
Re: Wing mirror glass
My S8, similar vintage had the same problem, so I just acquired non-dimming replacements which are much cheaper.
I don't actually find the external mirrors auto-dimming is a great benefit, only the internal one.
In the end I found and bought some used dimming replacements from the USA at a good price and they are working fine, the non-dimming ones I keep as "backup".
For an S8 the external mirror glasses from the US work fine if you can find the right curvature version, as they are the same size left and right. Not sure if that applies to a C5 though.
The only minor irritation is the "Objects may be closer...." drivel on the glass.

i ended up getting a second hand one off the german ebay for about 100 quid. luckily it was mint. S8 had similar issue and easier to come by but are a different shape to the 6
Daily beater, Daytona Avant, MTM stage 1 & box map, wagners, bilsteins, hotchkis arb, milteks, Girodisc stoppers etc

Re: Wing mirror glass
Yes. My rear view windscreen mirror has the same problem. God knows what that will cost. See what Santa brings me for Xmas.
Re: Wing mirror glass
The wings mirrors are specific to the RS6 I believe - hence the ££.
I think the rear view is more generic across a number of models, so easier to get.
Brand new is about 200 quid IIRC, but if you do a bit of research - I managed to pick up a good used one for 55 quid.
Just make sure to check the pics of any used one clearly - you don't want it already starting to go bronze colour, which some of the used ones for sale are.

Re: Wing mirror glass
I was quoted £240 ish for rear view mirror. Bought a good second hand one off Grizz at unit 20 at less than half price. Should arrive mid next week.
Still need to get the drivers side wing mirror sorted.
Anybody got one for sale ????????

Re: Wing mirror glass
I might have a wing mirror, will check condition over the weekend. I need a new rear view mirror, I assume all a6 c5 auto dims fit, but is there an easier/cheaper source for the glass element? I would guess its shared with other cars of that era, do jags/porkers/mercs have the same mirror? I recall reading the 911 and early boxter mirrors failed and some big Renault was an easy swap and cheap.

Hi puggie.
Would be very interested in the drivers side wing mirror glass if you have one and it’s in very good condition.
If not I will have to buy new.
Regards Steve.

Re: Wing mirror glass
Just fitted the rear view mirror that I got from unit 20. Nice to look in the mirror without the bronze coloured lines staring back at you.
Just the drivers door mirror to sort out when I get one.
Wishing all on here a very happy motoring new year.
Regards Steve.
