RS6 C5 Project

Post by RS62njoy » Fri Nov 15, 2019 12:52 pm

I already started with this project. It would be divided into two phases. First one is stripping my RHD RS6 and swapping it into my LHD S6. While at it I'll be taking care of engine upgrades tipically done while engine is out and also rebuilding the transmission. After this, car will be registered as a RS6 here in Spain.
Second phase will be a 01E 6 speed swap plus maybe turbo upgrades.
Money is limited so it will be a long term project.
For now it's teardown time.

Sounds like a huge job. Good luck.

How are you going to register it as an RS6 if it's an S6?

Well I didn't express it properly. Once I'm done with the car it'll go thru some engineering department for inspection of all the work and then all the rs6 parts will be added to the S6 technical data sheet that we have here in Spain for every car.
Back in the 90s when I used to live in the US, cars only had a car title with a VIN number and that was it. 4 years ago I was there again and bought a car and same thing applied. I don't know if it's still like that nowadays.

Yeah, every country has its peculiarities when it comes to registering imported cars.

Whereabouts in Spain are you? I have fond memories of maxing out my E36 M3 convertible in the roads inland of Marbella.

Well lots done this weekend. Still need to take the gas tank and fuel lines out as well as dashboard, all the wiring, rear bumper, rear subframe, carpet and cut the roof off. Once I get the rest of the chassis out of the garage I'll start working on the engine and transmission.

First dilema here. Being a RHD car, the engine wiring loom is too long to fit it on a LHD car since it comes from the left side of the engine and ends up in the right side of the car in the electrical box where the ECU is.
So I have 3 options here:
1- Just rout the excess of wire where the front battery used to be at.
2- Cut them to proper length and weld them all.
3- Try to find a LHD wiring loom from Germany or such.
1 an2 are free and 3 (which would be ideal) is gonna cost money and I don't know how hard it would be to find one.

By the way, since it's gonna be a LHD conversion, the carbon fiber piece that's in the dash on top of the glove box may have no use for me but I'll have to make sure of that. So, if no use for me it could be available for you guys in the UK that may have yours broken.
With time I'll find this out

Going off topic slightly - I like the floor of your garage - but how to you find it holds up to any spillages, wheeling trolley jacks and dropping the odd hammer etc. I have a painted concrete floor, but it needs repainting every couple of years and could do with something more durable.....

Wow, this is an incredible undertaking! Look luck and I look forward to seeing how this all comes together. I've stripped and modified other "simpler" cars but I take my hat off to you got tackling this! :notworthy:

I would love to be able to purchase this from you, as this is the only piece damaged on my car, here in South Africa. I have family in the UK if it makes things any easier. :D

Yeah this tile is not meant for this kind of stuff but it's easy to keep it clean. I use rubber wheels on everything to try not to mess it up much

Thanks for the supportive words guys. It is not an easy car to strip down. Tons of work involved but I take it as a personal goal that I've set here. Won't be on the road till probably this time next year since I now that updating this engine is not cheap. Actually nothing is cheap for this car
I'll keep you posted on the carbon fiber piece once I find out if is any good for me or not. It is a BLACK carbon fiber piece gotta tell you since I know there's also a blue carbon fiber.
I'll post a pic.
BTW, since I'm in Spain I don't mind shipping anywhere in the world, so South Africa is good too.
