Anything Else

Post by Mɐʇʇ » Thu Oct 17, 2019 12:26 pm

OK, so soon, this'll all have been done, either now or historically, by me:
* Upper Lambdas
* EGTs
* Wagner ICs
* Alternator
* MAF sensors
* Plugs & Coils
* Injectors cleaned & flow tested
* SAI removal & coded out
* Gearbox
* Rear calipers
* Front Calipers
* Turbos
* Bufkin pipe
* DRC=>Koni
* Hotchkis ARB
* "Matt mod" oil cooler pipe
* Gearbox selector switch

Is there anything else on the "do it while it's in bits list"?

Few of these are engine out jobbies...

Brake lines (if corroded) - especially if you have the engine out as the offside runs through the steering rack chamber
Steering rack refurb?
Steering hydraulic fluid pipes (if corroded)
Starter motor
Oil pressure sensor
Water temp sensor
Solid water pipe round the back (replace the orings)
Timing chain guide/ pad thingys
Current: RS6 C5 Avant, E60 5 Series, '78 Mini (Queued for restoration)
Past: R56 Mini Cooper S

Thanks. Reviewing:

Steering rack refurb? - do they have a life? Not massively up for spending 1K just in case if mine's likely to be OK for another decade.
Steering hydraulic fluid pipes (if corroded) - Yeah, good shout, I'll have a look.
Starter motor - How long do these normally last on these. There's no indication of the SM being worn, it cranks just fine.
Oil pressure sensor - Already done
Water temp sensor - will check, can't remember if I did that before or note.
Solid water pipe round the back (replace the orings) - Already done.
Timing chain guide/ pad thingys - Already done. Actually got a new water pipe on order which I'm gonna modify so I can easily get the RHS cover off for future fannying about.

Where do you draw the line though, you could replace everything and have a fresh build but it’ll cost thousands.

Totally. So lets say I don't mind pulling the motor every 5 years when I do the cambelt, since once the lock carrier is off, it's not much extra work.
And I do want mine to be one of the "good ones".

Has the alternator ever been replaced? It's not a real crap job to do, but easier if it's all stripped down.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

FWIW my steering rack just broke on me 10 days ago, so yes, such things happen.
Good news is that you can get them refurbished (ZF) at a very decent price :https://www.lizarte.com/en/POWER-STEERI ... -3075.aspx. Got it at 270€, to be installed next month (engine out).
