Gearbox Service

Post by Frazz82 » Thu Sep 19, 2019 11:21 am

I am going to give the RS a good service including the gearbox. While I have the sump off is there anything else worth changing other than the filter.

It drives well apart from when its cold I have noticed if you brake suddenly its like it doesn't change down quick enough and it bangs into first gear just as you stop.

Check the Vagcom to see if you've got any errors. Maybe log the temps to see if they are coherent.

Might be worth changing the harness (with integrated thermometer) preventively.

There's currently another thread with ordering info.

You'll also need a gasket. I'd also replace the bungs and their respective crush washers.

Cheers for that could the temps be causing the issue of it banging it first. Once its warmed up its fine I also think I need to start using it more as I also read they don't like being sat around for long periods.

I have doing some reading about the wrong gearbox filter / pickup pipe being fitted and I am wondering if mine may have the wrong the filter pipe fitted as when cold you get a whining that goes when warned up and I am also thinking of changing the gearbox harness as recommended above and see if it improves the gear changes as it feels like theres a delay between pressing the accelerator and the solenoids deciding what they want to do. I scanned it the other night and there were no fault codes present.

Sounds like pump cavitation from low fluid level or blockage.

Please can you elaborate on pump cavitation. i believe the wrong filter pipe is to long wouldnt that restrict the flow of the fluid giving me the issue I am having ?. Is there a dipstick to check gearbox level and what are the causes of a possible blockage.

Sure it would, if the pipe orifice was too close to the sump pan, that would restrict flow.

No dipstick. Blockage is most likely due to contaminated strainer.

Spot on cheers for that. It sounds like it could just be due a good service and see if that pipe is incorrect will change the harness as a preventive measure.

There isnt any slipping and other than the slight whine and occasional banging down into first when cold it drives fine.

Where is best to get the service parts from and is there a list of all part numbers or items I need. I am goign to use other thread for the harness.

Lastly is there a how to guide for servicing the gearbox.

If you’re getting the harness from zf then why not get the rest of the kit from them, too? I would get OE personally.

Right I am hopefully going to be doing this at the weekend. I am just in the process of ordering the parts from Tom at ACL getting the harness and all service parts apart from oil off him for £216 which I thought was ok really. Are the gearbox pan bolts a replacement item or can I reuse the old ones as there £50.

Also what can I use to refill the gearbox and is it filled through the drain plug.
