Heater controls ?

Post by Mark-RS » Sat Aug 17, 2019 1:37 pm

Buttons on mine are all worn to hell. Looks really tacky !

So... Question.... Is there any difference between ours and the Allroad version ? As this one looks pretty in good condition !

You can take it apart and just use the buttons.

Judging by the photos, that unit doesn't seem to have the soft-touch coating on it. Could be wrong. Doesn't mean you can't use the buttons from it, but there might be a colour difference. Or if you use the whole facia, it might look a bit odd in the dash.

I felt the same way as " - " button that lowers the temperature was starting to look more like a large white square. I just decided to get a whole new unit that matched in color. A bit expensive given it has the seat heating controls, but hopefully it will last me another 15+ years. I believe there is a small fan within the unit that with age starts to squeal. Two fixes for the price of one.
I got a new cover for the 'ESP' button as well. Also the trim around the button that closes the mirrors was starting to show some age. Went on a buying binge to bring my beast back up to code.

Is there an option to just replace the buttons ?

I've seen Stickers to put on, but kinda naff me thinks....

I used the Stickers you get off eBay and although they’re fiddly to get a good finish on look very convincing when done.

PFL c5’s use the none soft touch buttons, you can tell as it has an “off” button instead of the “auto re-circ” button.

As above, you can pull the units apart and swap buttons, I did it on my daily and just lived with the fact the auto re-circ button now had off on it, not sure if the v8 chassis uses a different climate control though, as I know the trans tunnel is much wider.

Come to think about it, the PFL climate control is a different shape and leaves a gap in a FL c5 dash at either end, and that’s why I went through with swapping all the buttons.

Some of the Sticker kits you can get for these are good. My buttons were worn and the Sticker kit has tidied them up nicely - you wouldn't know unless you look really really closely.

Yes, they're cut out, so illuminate just as well as the original buttons.

I got a second hand unit off flea bay from a “normal” A6 and just swapped the + and - buttons. They are not the soft touch but you really can’t see anything amiss when fitted. I tried the Stickers but they didn’t look as good. I also don’t think the standard buttons will go the same way.

Hi all, I'm reviving this thread as I'm moving onto tidying up the HVAC controls. I want to replace the buttons with good ones from a donor unit, luckily it's juts the six + & - buttons that are kaput .

Any guidance about how to remove the buttons?

No idea I'm afraid, but it'll inevitably be an inside out job.
FWIW, my Stickers I applied in 2015 still look decent enough.

Bought a complete second hand unit with good buttons for peanuts from Lithuania from EBay
Only used it to replace the buttons.
Feeler gauge in the top of the button and they just flip out.
You don’t have to remove the unit to replace buttons.
