Thanks Gripper/Jayjay, haven't had a chance to get the covers off and had a look. Topped the coolant up then drove back home last night about 30 miles and now no sign of a leak...any idea?
theres a fair few coolant pipes that side so could be a lose clamp or the rad is leaking

Keep an eye on your temps with the Vagcom or ac display. Might be thermostat causing local overheating and boiling. It then comes out of the expansion tank. Check there for wetness just after a run.

Just done a search on here looks like a bastardo of a job.
Confirmed I'm afraid... I had the same problem both with my former S6 and last year with the RS6. From experience it can come and go before breaking for good, but most of those V8 engine need a change at some point. The good news is that when it's done you won't loose a single drop of coolant anymore.

The fact that it stopped made me think of the expansion tank thing.I had it with my Golf where localised boiling caused the circuit to vent some fluid. Maybe you didn't hit the conditions to cause the localised boiling. Maybe your V51 pump is on the fritz and you didn't let the turbos cool down enough.

Under the car just now, checked the coolant tank and dry, not a sign of dampness. Underneath is the same no sign of dampness. There was quite a puddle so you would think there would be at least a damp hose or something.

Spoke to soon, just back from a run and got coolant leak, looks like left hand side of engine but can't be sure till I take the bottom cover off, guessing it's the bufkin pipe is that a straight forward fix I can do myself and where is the best place to purchase one ?
This has just popped up in the For Sale section if you are stil after one.

Thanks vagmachine, purchased just incase. Funny thing is I've now done about 600 miles since then and still no sign of this elusive leak.

Cheers
