Post by Mumbbles » Thu Feb 07, 2019 2:46 pm

Hi all
i have a small leak in the output shaft on the rear of the gearbox and the oil that come out when removing the seal was red?
but the when removing the atf lines the take engine out it look like 75w90 oil.
i have spoken to audi main delaler and has given me some part numbers
but my question is audi say that 75w90 LONG LIFE is on the drive end and the atf is in the gearbox main but going on the color of the oil that has come out it looks
like the other way round
can anyone advise please

There should not be red ATF in the transfer box. IF there is then either 1) somebody but the wrong stuff in last time or 2) the ATF is leaking from the box into the transfer box.

The oil in the transfer boxes and diffs is Gear oil SAE 75 W90 (synthetic oil).

/in fact the ATF shouldn't be red at all in the RS6 transmission. It's not OE ATF in that case.

the only seal leaking is the output shaft seal on back of gearbox but defo red oil when removed seal and on the atf lines from gearbox is yellow
but had car for 5 years now and had no problems with gearbox running smooth except seal of course

Ah OK, I misunderstood.

That's a good sign that the ATF is yellow in the gearbox. The OE stuff is yellowy.

Put the 75W90 in the transfer box and all should be good. Takes a bit less than a litre if memory serves.

Yup. In the transfer box. The fill plug is on the top right. You can get to it without removing anything else... just. You'll need a syringe with a tube to fill it, though.

No way of knowing. Either way, drain it and get some new stuff in. :)

Why didn't you get one from Audi? Wasn't particularly expensive last time I bought one.

they could not find the part on the system and had to take part down to them and they matched it up and was £38 +vat and would have taken 4 weeks according to camberly Audi
but needed sooner like most things in life so went on the hunt as the orignal seal was made by zf with no audi part number on it and managed to get it for £17inc postage and was OEM from zf

Nice. Poor showing from Audi there. Imagine my surprise.

My oil seal was £10 from Audi a few years back, they did mention that there was an updated seal and output flange though which I declined.
