Cylinder head pull....
Cylinder head pull....
Hi guys
Right so after doing a compression test cylinder 6 is really low(30psi) so looks like when the cam chain pad broke it jumped a tooth and there’s valve damage-so I’m going to take it I have to pull the engine to get it off or can I get it off with the engine still in?? Cheers

Re: Cylinder head pull....
Before you do that i’d suggest popping a little oil into cylinder 6 (via the spark plug hole) and doing the test again. If the reading goes up drastically then it’ll be a piston ring problem. If not then valves.
Normally i’d say heads can be taken off with engine in situ but manifolds and inlet need to come off. Manifolds to turbo are pretty far back to get access to. You may be able drop the subframe at the back to get downpipe and turbo for that side off but it’d be easier with engine out.

Feck! Bad luck.
The only thing I would say is that I think you'd be really pushing your luck to do it engine in - there comes a point where pulling the engine takes more time up front - but makes every other job easier after that and enables you to also do all the extra little cleanup/fettling jobs at the same time. I wouldn't enjoy pulling my motor again, but I would sooner just crack on and get it done rather than wrestling with every last thing. It's not hard to pull the motor - there's just quite a lot of things to do. Some good tunes, a bit of heat in the garage, a couple of packs of hob-nobs and job done.

If you need it, I have a BCY top half for sale listed on eBay.
Re: Cylinder head pull....
The same thing happened to my car.
Unless you are an octopus, the motor must come out.

30psi is a bit low to be worn piston rings. Only catastrophic ring failure could cause it and then oil wont change the reading.Nobby wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 5:39 pmBefore you do that i’d suggest popping a little oil into cylinder 6 (via the spark plug hole) and doing the test again. I think you are right in your assumption of valves. Especially if timing is known to have jumped. If you rebuild the head then make sure you get the head pressure tested. A bent valve could also have cracked the head slightly.
Re: Cylinder head pull....
This sounds like a fortuitous coincidence. I'd be jumping on it.
