RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
Hi all
I got a price through from Unit 20 this week and we're looking to add a couple of preventative jobs into the repair as the engine is out. One of these is to refurbish the turbos as they can just be removed at no additional labour cost. Unit 20 have quoted me a price for this but as they send them away I'm just keen to see what others have done to make sure that I do the best job possible.
Be grateful for thoughts, plus also any work which others might recommend that I do based on their own experiences given the current hole under the bonnet...

Re: RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
Sorry you're having so much expense, but your car is potentially a very nice one, so worth properly sorting it whilst you can.
I've always had excellent service and good advice from Grizz.
Good luck.
The hole you mentioned!

Re: RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
There is no point doing the job half arsed when you have the engine out.
Is your car in there at the moment? Its quite impressive seeing just how much room the engine and box take up!

Are you going standard or hybrid?R56WUF wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 3:21 pmHi all

I was in the same position a few years back with an engine pull so went down the hybrid route from AET. They make strong figures
Re: RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
Its funny because I've asked Grizz for his views and despite going down that route himself years ago he isn't really championing the idea.
From a layman's perspective I do wonder if higher specced parts mean less stress being put on them but genuinely have no idea if there is any validity in that.

Re: RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
I use owen developments for all my turbo jobs, although there's some good other places too.
I also recommend at least 1 upgrade even for stock - going from 270 degree to 360 thrust washers. It's the thrust washers that wear first - the 360 washers improve longevity.
Going beyond that - if it's with Unit 20 and going to be set up properly, you "could" upgrade - but IMVHO has to be part of an upgrade "package" to match everything properly and I would listen to Grizz in that scenario.

Re: RS6 Turbo Refurbishment
Yes, definitely go with the 360 thrust washers.
I upgraded to Milltek race dp's too for faster spool up.

I replaced my CHRAs with these units - https://www.turborebuild.co.uk/webshop/ ... -Core.html. They seemed well made and each came with their respective balancing sheets.
For what it's worth, I had 105k on my turbos and there was minimal shaft play... It was one of those "while you're in there" jobs. They work well.
