Something is clearly not right.....

Post by RSKiwi » Tue Nov 13, 2018 3:58 am

Well its been circa 5 months with my 04 RS6 daily driver......yep its a daily.....what was I thinking. Clocked up approx 5k miles.

So far my list of repairs and issues is as follows:

Nada.

Something cant be right.....surely?

On the other hand the list of things I have done is:

Full paint correction
Milltek cat back.
Pioneer SPH 120 install
All worn buttons replaced with original new items (hard won battles sourcing some of those I can tell you)

I have $100 bet with a mate who has an RS7 that his will be in the Shop before mine is.....my money is safe as houses.....in the hurricane belt.

Not mapped...... yet.

Ill wait until the engine has to be dropped and then replace the downpipes and cats with something a bit better then on the dyno she will go.

B7 was faster more agile more engaging to drive, this is more like going to the hardware store, walking down the hammer aisle and looking at the wares and going 'nope, nope, nope, nope' and then asking someone 'You got anything bigger? then going home and hanging a picture with the sledgehammer you just bought.

It is definitely more comfortable on a long drive though, I did approx 1000 miles in it when I picked it up as it was in the North Island and I live in the South and I was honestly very surprised at how fresh I was at the end of two days driving.

In short I should never have sold the B7 but I am currently very happy with this!

Must have been a special RS4 or your new ride is a dog, I had a stock B7 for 6 weeks and was very underwhelmed by its performance

His B7 was a really nice car. The C5 is faster than it seems cause it's a big lump, but the B7 would kill a standard C5 through the twists.

Apart from the tired Torgues (Whatever happened to Panda?) Converter that I have been living with for years (basically, if you kickdown when in say 5th, then more often than not you get a good old bang when things engage, workaround perfectly by gearing down on the paddles if you somehow feel that you can't already batter everything in 5th), my old girl never goes wrong.

We add around 3-4k miles a year to her, service her every year and she rewards me with passing through MOTs with zero issues to boot. If memory serves, I replaced both rear calipers and possibly pads last year and the 390mm BG custom front discs are getting towards needing replacing.

Having owned this old girl at the same time as our mapped B7 RS4 saloon, I was lucky. Decoked and remapped, the B7 is pretty damn nippy.

Fair enough, it would "beat" a "stock" 6 through the twists but that's about the only thing.
I am biased tho as the RS4 was stock and my 6 is tuned so a significant BHP difference.

Chunky I'm in the South Island and my commute for six months was the road attached
CA Rd.JPG
.

The B7 murders the 6 on this road....I know for a fact as I have driven it many times in both cars! Sure if you are talking an all out speed fest on an less windy road yes I am sure the 6 will be faster but when it comes to a corner/ 80% of NZ roads the 6 is just too much of a bruiser to keep up. I would never say it is slow though! Not sure if its just mine but the brakes on the RS4 also felt considerably better than the ones on the 6.

I wont get into whether a tuned or full modded 6 is just as capable as the RS4 on a windy road as that is a can of worms I have no interest in opening.

That is good to know! Fingers crossed I have a similar experience. One question I do have re your replaced rear calipers, what colour are yours? Mine are a shabby looking silver and I always thought they were meant to be black? They are next on my list for a tidy up.

Nice drive! My brother lives in the North Island, says the roads are superb in both islands. His little 1.0l micro struggles to get up some of the hills

DO NOT MOCK THE 106, FEAR THE 106! I for one would have given you "nuff props" for buying a 106 Rallye or XSI. I owned a 93' 106XSI and 01' GTI back in the day and they are wickedly fun to drive hard. Added Racelogic adjustable traction control to the GTI for reasons that are now utterly beyond me.

I dont mock them. Father had a 106gti and a black 106xsi back in the day, cut my teeth in those little rockets! Hence I have an attraction to fast Pugs, my old Mi16 ex race car taught me a lot about vehicle electrics...gotta love the French!

Lots of 105 Rallye's down here in little ol NZ!
