Taking weight out the car
Re: Taking weight out the car
Best bet would be replacing the glass for plastic, get rid of the weight that's higher up. As stated above, the big lump at the front is the MAIN problem, nothing else really matters while that's there. Basically wasting money and time, but if you have plenty of both, crack on and post some pics along the way.

Ceramic brakes for some unsprung mass savings.

Defo. I used to do a lot of powerboating - but we all fucked up when it became less about the boating and more about the boat - same applies here.
Oh - and the exception to earplugs is driving my landrover on the motorway - no point in installing a stereo, I just wear earplug style headphones and listen to muzac.

You can become very tunnel visioned too and end goal that you never intended on in the beginning. But once you get to it , it's too late .I started wanting too lighten one of my saph cossies and make the most of the 416 BHP. It turned into a stripped , caged and harnessed track car with rose joins and a bottle of fog-x and a cloth because " a heater box and blower would have been too heavy ". It turned from a very enjoyable car too go for a blast in , to something I loathed too take out on public roads .MattV8 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 24, 2018 7:56 pmDefo. Re: Taking weight out the car
Cor yeah! I used to have a Series 3 V8 on retreaded cross plies and that liked to make a bit of noise. I've put big, but, road biased tyres on the current one. It has a 4.0V8 and a sports exhaust - but cruising @ 80mph I'll be damned if I can hear anything other than wind & transmission whine - even with the headphones in.

Ha ha , your a glutton for punishment by the sounds of it Matt.
Mines only a 2. 1/4 petrol with a stage 2 head . 64hp ill have you know . But certainly a fun old girl too drive , she's in stock form ( well apart from allegedly being derv when she left the factory that is ) . I wouldn't dream of pushing it too 80 mind , large bits would part company I'm sure of it .
The 4.0 v8 is a lovely old engine though . I rebuilt one for a friend too put in his mk2 escort many moons ago .

Re: Taking weight out the car
I removed the luggage cover and centre devider/dog net. Saved about 10kg right there. And the rear boot mat. About 15kg in total. Standard exhaust is also loads lighter than a miltek.
Remove and blank rear wiper motor, take it CD player. Take out the Tool kit and air pump.. you’ll never use it. Got to be be 20kg in all that.

Re: Taking weight out the car
As I think shopp suggested, lithium batteries a smaller and much much lighter . You'll probably save 10-15kg just doing that.
I suppose you could also drill some weight out if the bumper irons of you wanted too . But I'm sure it will weaken them too , so be wary of going down that route .

Re: Taking weight out the car
All this is weight at the rear though, the car is waaaaay too front heavy as it is.Rs6spec wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 1:36 pmI removed the luggage cover and centre devider/dog net. Re: Taking weight out the car
I wouldnt worry, it’s not that dynamic you’d noticed any handling improvement. Stick some new anti roll bars on and put DRC back on if you want it to handle “better” I’ve got drc and hotchkiss anti roll bars and it drives well enough for a old timer. I mainly belt in in a straight line anyway : )
Re: Taking weight out the car
Weight reduction is always a case of go all out or leave it alone. If you go mad and strip every ounce there is out of a car you will make a huge difference. It will be horrible to drive day to day but as its so much faster when you want it to be it is worth living with. If you try and do little bits you will cause discomfort and inconvenience for little to no improvement in thrill when you are on it and you will find that its just not worth putting up with the downsides for the minimal upside. My advice is to go to one extreme or the other. Trying to find a balance will only leave you wishing you had left it alone.
Re: Taking weight out the car
Totally agree, stripping weight out of a luxobarge is a false economy.PipRS6 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 1:13 pmWeight reduction is always a case of go all out or leave it alone. Re: Taking weight out the car
I totally get what your all saying and there’s no way I’d strip the inside out as it’s a nice place to be while holding on for dear life,I just think there’s weight to come out of it especially the front end where that huge engine is. Think a diff is on the cards (as well as box)for next year as works going really well at the moment-and I’d love a set of those shocks but there silly money!!!bam_bam wrote:Totally agree, stripping weight out of a luxobarge is a false economy.PipRS6 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 1:13 pmWeight reduction is always a case of go all out or leave it alone.
