Cam timing VCDS measuring block 090

Post by bilko1 » Sun Sep 23, 2018 6:55 pm

I've just slipped a new cam belt on my RS6 and when checking group 090 with VCDS at idle i have -1degree is this acceptable or should i buy some more bolts and redo the timing? I followed Elsawin to the letter and used all the special tools.

I think the acceptable range is between -1 and +3 so you're within spec. Mine was hovering between -0.5 and 0 IIRC.

Thanks Shop, just read your how to and saw that at the end. Strange thing with mine was the cams never moved when I took the belt off. Pretty straight forward job, only problem I had was a water pump bolt sheared and I ended up having to get a helicoil.

Depends where in the cycle your engine is when you released the cam I guess. Mine would have been tdc I guess because I would have locked the crank before checking the original timing.

Mine was locked with the crank tool first but hadn't been run for a few weeks. Finished doing a few other jobs discs and pads, outer cv boot, right hand rocker cover gasket and fan control unit. Rechecked the timing with VCDS and it's now at 0 with the occasional 0.5 appearing, that will do me. Just waiting for a new fan as they are on back order.
