Starter solenoid jammed on creating the whine that you heard earlier that you thought was the power steering. After lots of overspinning the starter, the starter has seized solid jamming up the engine.

That's my hunch.

Apologies for the lack of response - I started a new role yesterday and have been a bit pre-occupied.

Firstly, I am impressed by the level of detail in some of the answers. Should any of these be correct then the prize will reflect this - in some cases I may stretch to a duo sized bar...

The car is now at Unit 20. Grizz made contact yesterday to confirm receipt. I’ll update everyone once Grizz has had opportunity to inspect the car fully and establish the cause. I’m facing east and hoping for a kind (to the wallet and the car) diagnosis!

I’m going to go with something jammed in the torque converter/flex plate area.

It is odd that the starter motor doesn’t make any noise though. I have an Allroad in my Shop with a seized motor and the starter will still click when I turn the key. Similar symptoms to what you have. Possible that whatever is jammed caused your starter to fail too.

I’m not sure if I’m less comfortable about not knowing what is wrong with the car or the way conversation has gone on this thread...
