Choice of Oil ?

Post by Mark-RS » Mon Sep 03, 2018 9:51 am

My Oil light came up yesterday on the way back from Alton Towers, so I am going to need some to pop in...

What is the Oil of choice for these cars ? I've had a quick search but didn't see anything glaring obvious to satisfy me.

The lube I generally use depends on the satisfaction level on the particular occasion. Just use what pleasures YOU most not what others think.

Has to be VW505.01 spec.

I like Mobil but any reputable brand will do.

Doesn't matter if it says it's for diesels.

As for the engine oil, I have no idea.

Mobil is good if you’re going for it a lot. But Castrol for when you’re quite close to the “edge”

The C5 is a different beast though. There are some specific reasons relating to the positioning of engine components that require a specific oil.

IIRC it doesn't matter what you put in the C6 because it leaks out almost immediately. :sekret:

I know about this little secret ImageImage I’ve been a victim of it. I’ve got this fixed. Cost me a bit but it’s peace to my mind. Took it to a specialist in Oxford.

Is there a permanent fix for it? Uprated seal or something?

Ended up going with Petronas 5W30 505.01

Seems to do well for the F1 team, so I am hoping for about an extra 30bhp or so over everyone else. Also at only £36 for 4 Litres, I was pleasantly suprised !

Don't think I've seen a 5W30 505.01 oil before.

According to the guys who fixed it it’s a new updated seal.

While it was there I thought I’d have it engine and gearbox remapped too.

This was the one, I'm fairly sure. Doesn't state 505.01 on the site, but it does say it on the back of the bottle.
