A question for you Oilman:

I might not be able to source Motul Sport 5W40 in South Africa, whilst I should be able to find Motul 300V Power 5W40 after doing a quick search. What would be the difference between these?

And would a 5W40 still be the choice of oil for my RS6 in our climate (although this year the UK had a decently warm summer) which doesn't get below freezing.

The 300v is the next level up and is a fantastic oil. It is aimed at the racing world but you can use it for road use no problem, Motul have claimed in the past it is not ideal for doing high mileage (100K) in vehicles with Catalytic converters but I have never heard of any real world issues with that.

It will also be fine in your climate, it will just provide great cold flow on start up, and that is a good thing. Once the engine is up to temp it should regulate its own temp. If you heavily modify it though, I would look to use an SAE50 over an SAE40 as it will generate more heat within the engine.

Good evening all.

Previous (several years) the car has run on Castrol Egde Professional Titanium FST Longlife III 5W30. As i'm unable to find this other places than at the stealership for a price i wont even mention, I'm looking for other options.
I have narrowed to the below, All are VW 505.01.
  • Motul Specific 5W40
  • Motul 8100 X-Clean FE 5W-30
  • Mobil 1 Super 3000 XE 5W-30
  • Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W-40
  • Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W-30
  • Fuchs Titan GT1 5W40
I do filter and oil every 10k Km

So, what would you recommend and why?

Appreciated.

FST 5w40 if it’s 505.01.

30 is a bit thin for this engine given the particular positioning of the turbos.

I also like Castrol because of their effective advertising campaign when I was a kid.

As already mentioned do not bother with the SAE30, but anyone of those 5w-40's is fine, they are all good.

What about Castrol edge 0-40? Sure it out performs 5-40 at cold start but has same protection when hot? I can’t see the compromise?

Hasn't got the right approvals. Neither has the Motul as far as I can see. I personally would (and do) use Castrol Edge FST 5W40 VW505.01:

Oil and plugs ordered. Time for a service alongside the MOT fixes I guess.

Discount worked a charm ! Thanks !
