Didn't expect to have to remove the entire door pretty much !

That's interesting, I've done pretty much the exact same job on my D2 S8 NSR door just the other day.
In my case it was the upper nylon pulley on the window mechanism that had shattered (visible just below the window line in the photo).
Once you get the door apart (and everything disconnected) the whole mechanism including top door frame is only held on by 4 big bolts.

Thing is, with an S8, there is a LOT of stuff to clear out; trim, decorative panels, sound insulation, water barriers, wiring, all manner of bits inside the door!
This is what the part looks like; cost me about £80 from A8Parts. There are a lot of variants, I needed one for twin-pane glass and blinds.
