Maf sensors

Post by Matt58 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 1:43 pm

Hello everyone, going to replace maf seals and wiring to try and solve lumpy idle on my 03 rs6 avant, going to order seals from company called sealsorce in Portland USA if I can't find reasonably priced uk alternative to oe. I also noticed that the female 4 pin connectors for the mafs are both pretty knackered possibly causing arcing as the insulation is breaking up, my question is, can anybody give me part numbers or where I can get this connectors from, I would appreciate any advice as I'm a new owner, thanks. Matt

The connectors are only $12 each from Audi. Replaced both of mine.

These are genuine. TE connectivity is the OE manufacturer.

Just a quick update, contacted company in states to discuss purchase of new maf seals and to my suprise guy on the other end was so unhelpful I didn't bother in the end. Cut a long story short I replaced wiring connectors and cleaned both maf sensors with appropriate product put everything back as carefully as poss and car idled worth than before, took out for a run and fine on the slab but a slow speeds dangerous so headed for home very disconsolate after all that effort, spent evening looking at new maf prices and new seals. If at first you don't succeed try try again, sums up life really, took airbox of again and reseated, box seamed for reasons unknown to sit better and snigger fired the beast up and perfect tick over, gearbox seamed smother, in love with my dream car again. Matt.

Good result. Its amazing how sensitive some cars can be to the tiniest things... Especially now everything is computer controlled!

The air box is a terrible design. Whoever came up with it should be embarrassed.

I dismantle the box air of a friend on the forum the wiring has been moved it is no longer against the partition by fire but along the fuel pipe which leaves room for 2 debimetres I find it very clever I have to replace the candles and debimetres I will take a picture

Thanks for all replies, glad it's not just me. things are working fine at the moment so will leave well alone, but any problems in the future I would seriously look at rerouting a few things back there to make more room. Lucky really as I was about to shell out £2-300 on new sensors and seals, wonderhow many owners have replaced perfectly good mafs.

I have had the same problem. I had to reset the air box every few weeks as it would lift slightly and cause problems. I think over the years the air box may have warped a little and won't stay in place. What I have done now is added a square O-ring between the MAF tube and the air box. This lowered the MAF tube about 3-4mm. They sit right down in the seals Now and I haven't had a problem for quite while.

Would you believe that manufacturers have teams of people for this kind of thing? Generally an engineer will design the layout of an engine bay with the airboxes etc. Those designs and 3D models then go to a team of people (usually with backgrounds as mechanics / vehicle technicials) who check to make sure parts can be easily accessed. When things like this come up they go back to the designers to tweak it.... Obviously it doesn't always work out!!

It might be terrible - but what would an improvement be? All the aftermarket setups I've seen have been even more terrible pulling in hot air......
