My C5 RS6 Avant had H and R coil overs fitted by the previous owner 5 years ago with less than 20k miles since.

However, despite low mileage etc they appear to be on the way out.

Is this usual?

It's low in mileage but probably about right time wise.

Dampers are typically good for 60K miles which would be 6 years at 10K per year! (I got a degree in maffermatics!!)

I went through a set of Bilstein coilovers on a light Clio 172 in two years and less than 10k. I sent them off for a service and was amazed when they said a full rebuild was needed.

With that in mind the above could well be true. What symptoms are you suffering from?

H&R are saggy and crashy.

There's a binding noise coming from them.

I agree that they're "crashy".

If I am looking at replacements which are the best to go for if not H and R?

My billies are about 8 years old looking at the history of the car, and they are due a rebuild IMHO. Don't know if there anything better without spending serious money.

I like my PSS9. Car handles nicely on them. They bottom out a bit too easily if you hit a big dip or bump but otherwise they keep the car nicely planted even on poor surfaces.

Seconded. I have these and they are the most comfortable coileys I have ever experienced. The weight of the car is a factor I'm sure. But the balance of firm ride and comfort is something I haven't had anywhere else. And that's on 20's with a very thin tyre profile.

I seem to remember coming across a set on a Yank website a few years back; something like $5500 + tax + shipping

If you find some ohlins, then look for penske's and the ohlins will seem good value!

I could never understand why so many owners were so keen to remove DRC, for what appears to me to be inferior replacements that may not last any longer or be cheaper.
Now that Daveperk has moved on to C7, am I the only one left happy with DRC?
Replaced 2 leaking front shocks 7 years ago at 30k miles, now at 65k and all good.
( hope that’s not famous last words!)

I think the first thing the new owner of Dave's car did was change it to coil overs.

I would assume that most people read about them going wrong often and thought it wouldn't be worth the hassle of having them.

My car has H&R coil overs which were fitted in 2005, so the owner at that time didn't think much of the DRC after only 2 years.

The next big purchase for my car will be a new set of Bilstein's as the H&R seemed to have sagged and the ride doesn't seem to be that great. Unfortunately I have nothing to compare it to but Bilstein's seem to get good reviews on here.
