ECU problems

Post by JimRS6 » Fri Jun 22, 2018 1:08 pm

Guys: need some advice: 2003 RS6 Avant
My ECu has developed a fault - a short to ground on the Camshaft Bank 2 circuits. ECU has been sent off to a specialist who 'fixed it' and has been back to them since, as the fault reoccurred straight away.
Now: I've been advised to purchase a new ECU from Audi, but given the age of the car, I'm reluctant to spend £800 - £1500 on a new ECU and programming it.
So is it possible to put a second hand ECU in, with the transponder / key internals, with minimal reprogramming?
The cars worth 6k and I'd even contemplate breaking it, as it hasn't moved since April. but sadly don't have anywhere to do that. I'm very frustrated.

Who was the specialist that 'repaired' it? Did they give any reason why it failed immediately and why they couldn't repair it. Did they refund any money spent on the repair?

BBA Reman I believe (the garage I deal with sent it off)
the Garage asked for a refund on the repair work as it didn't work. I haven't seen the actual report on it. I will be scrutinising the bill as I only expect to pay the £60 inspection fee.

hello to you jimrs6 why did you send the ecu repair to make the controls for sensors and wiring? a calculator is rather reliable and gaillard, to answer you yes you can put a used calculator you will need to recode new transponder, for cons I'm surprised you announce a rs6 c5 to 6000 € in France c on average 10 / 12k for a model maintained with 200mkm

I've heard a few negative things about BBA Reman.

There is another repair place in Heanor, Derbyshire. I'd try them. http://www.ecutesting.com/

They are both much of a muchness. The latter did some "work" on an abs module that they sent back worse. I dismantled it managed to do a better job with my soldering iron.

I suspect that the ECU is borked and if you send it off, you'll just be wasting your time and money. You're better off finding a 2nd hand one and recoding it to your car. Or recoding everything else to your new ECU. If you get it from a UK RS6 then it should be reasonably straightforward with the right tools.

That's worrying. They sorted the ABS module on my other car by the look of it.

Makes you want to start your own repair company as you know it will be done properly.

Those ABS modules are a nasty job, though. Maybe they were having an off day when they did ours...

I've been told that the company my ecu was sent to isn't the best, and frequently say they cant fix ECU's, after charging £xxx, so I am going to call the ECU Doctor, as he's highly recommended by other people. if he agree's with them, I've been offered an ecu with the Immobiliser removed.

I think we spoke on Facebook. I recommended ECU doctor from the GTO world. They are brilliant and don't charge you a penny for inspection and diagnosis.

Yeah we did Pip, thanks for the recommendation, they are very helpful.
ECU is being sent off this weekend, luckily Mum is heading down to Plymouth for a Hot Air Balloon Trip, so will drop it in enroute. they dont think they can repair it as such, as they have limited data for the RS6 ECU, however, they are cloning it, and will send me a cloned copy. we'll soon see if that works, hopefully I'll have the car running in time to drive it for a few days before its MOT runs out, and I'm hit with another bill (although likely to only be Offside Lower Arms)

Then rather reluctantly, I'm looking at selling it. - looking at a Toureg 5.0 V10 TDi or a BMW Derv (unless a cheap m140i comes up) I do silly miles up and down the country each month, although my mileage rate covers the fuel just about, and its a fantastic drive, Its getting long in the tooth. I could park it up somewhere and stick it on specialist insurance, drive it now and again etc, but then its a waste of a car

That's quite a delivery method - hope it doesn't land on someone!!

Well then! It's a Bosch Motronic. EVERYTHING you need is over at http://nefariousmotorsports.com
Using the resources there, and with some guidance from sweegie here as well, managed to put my ECU into boot mode, download & save the (locked) aftermarket tune on it.
Then reinstall a vanilla "stock" RS6 tune (which I downloaded from that site", run the car up on it to make sure my rebuild of the car had worked OK for a week or 2.
Then edit the SAI out from the stock tune and re-upload.
Then finally edit the aftermarket tune (including resetting all the respective checksums on it) and finally upload that back to the car.
It was a LOT of learning, but it's all possible.

And here's a "right" box for many of our cars, IIRC there's 2x possible versions (early & late) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-RS6-4B- ... 1438.l2649

"Limited Data" - WTF? Here's the actual stock code it runs - http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/i ... 49.0title=
And it's a Bosch Motronic ME7.1.1 - there's an absolute wealth of information out there about them.

So an update:

ECU ordered via ECU doctor, mine was sent off to be cloned. Fast forward 2 weeks:
Phone call at 9am yesterday, BAD NEWs: The Replacement ECU is faulty/not up to scratch and they can’t get another. End of their involvement. They say they do not have the data and components for a repair on my ECU, my ecu arrives back via courier today.
So: in that waiting time I missed out on a second hand ECU for £300 and AP Autotech don’t have any in stock. Back to square 1, and I honestly am missing it. The A4 V6 Quattro Convertible We’ve bought, just isn’t the RS6, half the power (if that) and just isn’t as fun on A Roads, although better on fuel on a run.
I’m at a loss what to do now :(

Can't a regular me7.1 be flashed with the RS6 binaries?

Have you tried asking MRC?
