The best of the bunch!

Popped into my local stealers today for my weekly shopping list, the young lad behind the parts desk couldn’t find what I was after on the system so had to get the parts manager.

Old fella but very friendly, dealt with him many times before but he never remembers me bless.

Quickly sorted my query and noticed the car was a C5 RS6.

He then proceeded to tell me of all the stories when it was released how they would take the first demo cars out at night to try and hit the speed limiter only to find they’ll go over 155 in standard form? Take it with a pinch of salt but he quoted his highest run up to 170mph before backing off, guess it was easier to get away with that sort of thing back in 2003.

Anyway after a lengthy chat he concluded with the line ‘I’ve driven them all, every RS model since and the (C5) RS6 is the best of the bunch, no other can match its character.’

Really made my day as I walked out the showroom past all the spanking RS5 and TTRS beasts!

That's a pretty cool story. I think with the C5 being the Great Grandfather, it has a lot of character and respect.

Noice.

I've heard that about the limiter, too.

Had nothing done to mine ie still in standard form and carried on through 155 to 170 mph on the speedo a number of years ago on the autobahn! Always worked on the basis 170 mph showing on the speedo was probably actually nearer 155 mph in the real world?

I wasn’t sure if because he was driving a demo car it had a more generous map on it that didn’t include the restriction.

The top speed is mightily impressive even more so back in 2003 but it’d take a brave man to find the limit in a 1600kg, 15 year old car!

Bone dry, maybe. And we all know bone dry RS6 is going nowhere!

Is bone dry good enough for a single blip of the throttle? Probably not.

This!! Car speedos tend to be about 10% lower than real world speed. If you get a very accurate GPS speed box like a V-BOX you will see it. However, that is the speed that the ECU is governing the speed limiter by as well. I guess Audi and others raised the limit a bit so they weren't building cars that would stop before 155....

Sounds like a great old man. Like many his age he can't remember who he dealt with yesterday but he will tell you in fine detail what he did 15 years ago!!

That might have been true 30 years ago, but the RS6 consistently reads exactly 5kmh above actual road speed as measured by GPS.

Interestingly the vehicle speed sensor reads true so the 5kmh discrepancy is voluntary.

In the USA all speedos are accurate. I have never had a car there that has deviated by as much as 1mph from the GPS speed (although, I don't tend to drive at high speeds there).

/Tyre wear (difference between 7mm and 3mm tread) would account for a 1.05% under reading on the RS6. At 170mph indicated by VSS, that would be 168.2 in reality.

When you say GPS speed do you mean on a Satnav? They aren't likely to be the most accurate either. V-Box is the sort of thing that are used for performance measuring. They are super accurate and super expensive. Haven't tried the Audi on one but will be interested to see. The last car I used one on was my 3000GT so as you say much older....

I've got one of those performance boxes. Can't remember what it's called. Bought it to test performance on the RS6 but never really got on with it.

All my gps devices read exactly the same speed when used simultaneously. Accurate enough for my purposes.

That's what the B7's will be soon enough, why do you need to be brave? As long as it's maintained well there shouldn't be an issue :?:
