Well - that's two I killed!!

Post by Daveperc » Mon May 07, 2018 3:59 pm

So, the old beast is gone!

Finally had some interest so, after three weeks sitting on the drive, I started her up without problems and got her ready. Took a 30 minute run to warm her up all fine, and the guys arrived to buy. Took one of them for a quick spin, including a solid accelerate from 30 to 70 in S mode. Part way through I though it coughed, and as I pulled up at the lights there was clouds of blue smoke!

Not entirely sure what went bang, but there was oil in the radiator filler cap, and a lot of smoke....

There followed a renegotiation on the price - but in the end I figured I really hadn't the stomach to take her up to MRC for a re-build, or a new engine. :boohoo:

So, that the second engine I have destroyed in 11 years and 220000 miles :-(

Better treat the C7 with some respect!

Well, that's both good and bad luck. Bad luck that it went bang, but good luck it didn't go bang on the way home with the new owner cause it would have looked very bad on you.

Too true - they were three very burly Eastern Europeans! Could have ended very badly!!

Iterestingly the guy who bought it has a saloon that his Missus has pranged - so his plan now is to swap the engines over (His is only 50K) and he'll be on his way..

Perhaps they'll show up here one day!

I may just have read too many troll threads on Pistonheads but this sounds familiar to this thread:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/top ... &t=1675777

There was this link to this on that thread too:

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2045078/m ... ed-faulty/

Having not met the buyer I just hope this is just be a massive coincidence though.

Hmm. I hope this isn't the case here.

Dave, was one of them left alone under your bonnet for any period of time?

Not for any significant time - and to be honest I can't recall all that clearly if the bonnet was open at the time when I wasn't with the car - it is possible....

Can someone tell me how having a lot of oil in the radiator filler cap actually gets to create blue smoke??

It doesn't Dave

Oil up your backend pipe for dramatic smoke effect, a potato up the other pipe for the full stereophonic sound effects, and one under your bonnet for 2 minutes throwing oil around !

Both pipes were belching the smoke - and I'm pretty sure it wasn't smoking before I gave it some beans - there was that much I couldn't have missed it!

There's no oil on the drive or similar if they did put some up the pipes - they must have had a long fill pipe to get it up there.

However, it does seem a very strange coincidence given the PH story.

Car has gone to an address in N17, so keep an eye open if you're in the area - and let me know if it's not smoking!!

Slept on it - I was scammed - no doubt in my mind!

The clever part is that it's a two part scam. Oil up the exhaust pipe while I'm away showing the guy the paperwork; then the test drive (me driving) which gets the pipes warm and generates loads of smoke; then bring it back and while I'm wandering in a daze wondering what I've blown, they pour oil into the expansion tank - it didn't even have time to get too hot!

The engineer in me is feeling very cross with myself - but at the time the brain is doing 100MPH trying to figure out the symptoms etc, not focussed on the actual events.

Police not interested, but will be briefing Action Fraud, and Autotrader. I also have the name, address and two mobile phone numbers to give to people!

Bother - stay safe people!!

Is there any CCTV local to you that might have their faces on it?

For this reason I wouldn't sell a car privately these days. There are too many scumbags about.
