Dodgy handbrake is highly possible. They should have checked that though. I think it's 80% likely to be an iffy handbrake and 20% the calliper. I don't leave it parked up with the handbrake on but in the course of normal driving it is needed unfortunately.

That's exactly how you kill them - by not using them.

I thought the OP said he disconnected the handbrake cable from the caliper to eliminate?

It may not be returning all the way on the lever though . I was forever under my cossie manually returning a stuck handbrake mech. The return spring goes weak .So may be worth seeing if it will return any further by hand .

I've not disconnected anything. I started parking it with the handbrake not engaged rather than with it pulled on. This way it can't stick on due to being left for a while. The car isn't always used much in the winter months due to the salt.

Checked it after a run today. At destination the rears didn't feel that much different. On returning home the rear driver's side brake disc was about 120-150C when I returned and the passenger one was more like 170-200c. Front brakes were about 50-60c.

The car had been in a lot of stop start farting about traffic.

If a previous owner had put boggo cheap drilled discs on instead would that make any difference? I had the front discs and pads changed so I know they are quality ones.

The back discs and pads only do about 30% of the stopping effort when braking. As your fronts were only 50-60 deg, even with cheapo discs, it still suggests a problem of some sort.

The fronts should be the one that are at hotter than the rears . As said , it kinda looks like both of the rears may be dragging a bit

Watched something on YouTube with a thermal imager showing how brake discs and wheels get hot. I now want a thermal imager....

I remember reading that the Bosch 5.7 puts more brake force on the rear wheels on light braking. You shouldn't however reach temperatures in any disc over 50 degrees with normal driving and braking, you should easily be able to touch them after stopping.

It's at the garage and they've said it needs a new calliper. Will have to keep an eye on the other side just in case that one is also a bit flaky.

I would suggest replacing both. I got TRW ones from Euro's. They were £284 but with an online discount code they were 35% off so £200 each. Worth doing both.

I think the other side might have already been replaced previously.
