Drivers side turbo removal

Post by Jayjay101 » Sun Apr 22, 2018 8:59 pm

Hi guys
Any tips on getting it off? It’s taken me far to long getting the passenger side off and the drivers side is looking like a even more of a nightmare as one of the bolts looks like I can’t get to it with out removing the manifold-any help would be great! Thanks

So what you need is the proper triple square socket - it's a bit like a torx, but not quite. Clean the <beep> out, tap it in to seat it, and use a bit of heat to free it off (be v. careful of the stainless oil pipe it's next to). You'll probably shear the stud off anyway....but might be lucky. You'll need all new nuts when you reassemble - only the Audi nuts are the right ones for the job, and use some Nickel grease.

I have this set - it's good - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BERGEN-SPLIN ... Sw9GhYkyQA

And if that doesn't work - dremel cutting disk.

Main issue, as you can see from the pic - was that the nuts had been on 11 years. This meant they'd fused onto the studs and the triple square socket was in pretty poor condition. I had to re-drill and tap a few.

You might also be able to bastardise an open ended spanner to get a bit more torque on it. But it's quite likely it'll be a dremel, or drilling it out job.

These cars are f##king nightmare to work on!!!!! Ive gotten the driver side off without snapping anything(and using a 16mm spanner)but I left the nuts to soak in oil for a week-done the same with passenger side so we’re see what happens, going to have a go tonight

Losing the SAI saves a bit of space. But yeah, everything has an order and a method and if you don't follow it, you're fucked. I think my conclusion was that this is about the maximum level of tightness (of fit) and complexity I can be bothered with, when I was doing it. I don't look forward to doing it again, though of course would if I need to - cos once the car is together, it is pretty good.

I’ve made plates up so the SAI is gone now also I’ve got so crows foot spanner’s that I can try too..

I just removed all the fittings completely and tapped a thread in the ports in the back of the head - no gaskets to leak!

Nice. Assuming you're rebuilding the turbos, make sure you upgrade to 360 degree thrust bearings. Everything else is optional, but the upgraded bearing is a no-brainer.
