Name that sound

Post by Siph3r » Thu Apr 12, 2018 6:24 pm

So, a week ago, while slowly maneuvering the car outside the garage, I thought I heard like a metallic rattle just as the rpm' increase from idle.

Had a drive today and heard it again.

So any ideas?

That's what I'd put my money on. Cam chain tensioner.

Even though I'm filming this from the rear, I'm more than certain that the sound comes from the front of the engine.

I have read several posts on the cam tensioners, but all seems to rattle at startup?
Mine does not make a single sound, even after 7-10 days between startup.

I just wish there was an easy way to check the cambelt without removing half the car(yep, I just read the DIY for that )

If this is the camchain tensioners, park the car, or usable until I get my new cam cover gasket and do it all at once?

@Shop; Yes, i'm a punk and do feel lucky

There's a chain at the front, too. On bank 1.

If it's the cam belt flapping around, you definitely don't want to be driving it.

Sounds like cam chains/adjusters to me too. Get someone else to rev and you can actually put your hands on the adjusters to feel them rattle. My money is wear on the cam pads.

Mine makes the same sound - always at +- 1200 RPM. I too went straight to thinking cam chains, not the cam belt. I haven't driven my RS much in my 6 weeks of ownership (about 150kms / 90miles odd).
