2004 Audi RS6 Plus C5 Avant - South Africa
Re: 2004 Audi RS6 Plus C5 Avant - South Africa
I did a little digging over the weekend and unfortunately don't have the links with me at the moment, but it looked like I found info from this forum as well as others, where it seems that the newer 2010+ RNS-E's weren't able to be coded (not successfully every time) to work on the A6 platform (from VCDS). Problem is, I was reading this in the early hours of the morning and now I'm not sure if I should gamble and get an A3 RNS-E.

Hi Guys,
I have read that the plus got a new ECU, not the same as the earlier RS6. Is this the case or is it just new firmware?

It's just a slightly different map.
Daytona RS6 C5 Avant. Viper'd, Billies, Waggers, MTM box brain, C6 stoppers, xcarlink, R8 coolant cap (woohoo)
///M3 E46 | XC90 (V8, natch) | Passat GTE | RR Classic V8 flapper

I can't see it being a different ECU all together. Just changes in the map as Shopp said.
Instead of making 450 the Plus makes 480.

You sorted your RNS-E wiring?

Unfortunately, not yet. Graft has been keeping me busy - I still need to try find another RNS-E to pull the button PCB off of, so I can get my radio operational. Either that or bite the bullet and spend a packet on a much newer RNS-E and hope I can get the unit coded and working properly, haha.
I sorted out the gearbox oil and filter a couple weekends ago - approximately 88700km on the clock. Looks like it was done a year or two ago - was happy to clean out the sump though and move the magnets into a better position. I'll post up some photos soon.

Wow. So not much has changed in 8 months unfortunately. I have been completely and utterly swamped with work - I am hoping Q3 2019 will be when thing calm and I will have more time to actually focus on cars in general, never mind the RS. I don't even thing I have ticked over to 89000km yet.
I purchased a new VARTA 110ah unit today for the RS - the unit that was in the car from the time I bought it was not only a cheapie but incorrectly spec'd. The distributor said that we don't get the 920CCA unit here in South Africa, but the 870CCA. Their comment regarding this was "VARTA changed the design of their batteries for warmer climates (Africa, Middle East, etc.) and as a result there were changes to the capacity of the batteries. The lower CCA does not affect vehicles in warmer climates as much as in colder climates."
My CTEK wasn't able to help the cheapie (dated Nov 2017). I've had great results with the VARTA's in the past, lasting 7yrs odd each without any maintenance from an intelligent charger.
