So, after a great afternoon at the Passion for Power show at Tatton Park on Sunday we decided it best for the missus to take on driving duties home as I'd sampled a couple of refreshing shandies...
After a sedate drive back (bless her) I got out first, collected kids, bags etc. & left wifey to park up on the drive. All good as I thought.
Skip forward 24 hours and I'm trying to find the car keys (they're invariably left in many different locations when the missus is in charge), found them and realised that something wasn't quite right. Only half the fob was present...
Ran round the back of the house to the rear driveway, opened the UNLOCKED drivers door and lo and behold, the other half of the key was still in the ignition barrel!
So the RS had been sitting on the drive all Sunday night and most of Monday with all doors unlocked and the key in
Seems that as she's only an infrequent driver of the '6 she'd not put the trans into P so not allowing the key to be removed. Then on turning the ignition off & pulling the key out of the barrel (as she thought), the fob had split into two, as it's designed to do when changing the fob battery.
Oh well, lesson learned and no harm done but as both key fobs are well worn now I'm thinking it's safest to buy a new one.
On to my question.
Do I have to purchase direct from Audi showing the V5 or can I source elsewhere?

You can buy replacement shells from ebay (cheap) and transfer the blade + immo chip + remote internals to them. If you want a completely new third key you can again buy a complete set from ebay (still very cheap), have a local locksmith cut the blade and then copy the IMMO data from one of the original ones to the new.

Just wanted to add that a dremel tool thing is going to be your friend getting the circuit board carefully out of the original key as it stuck in there during manufacturing. Don't slip with it as you will damage the PCB and then its game over. The immobiliser thing is like a little pill, so don't lose it!

Also, I believe the keys need to be re synced with the car with the battery being out for an extended time. There is a procedure for pairing them once you are in the car, it's knocking around somewhere.

I don't think he needs to mess with the key and transponder. Sounds like it's just the remote transmitter that's become detached from the key (as it is supposed to). Presumably it's then suffered some further mishap.

Thought when you split the keyfob the battery comes out with the key section - not the fob. Therefore the fob will to be sync'd again.

Pretty sure I did this when I changed the buttons (which BTW can be prised out with the fob intact).

My experience of local locksmiths cutting the key has been poor - is there a way of getting them to cut a key that isn't <beep>?
And - programming the pill - Felt like a bit of a sphincter quiverer. Or maybe I was just nervous as what I was actually doing was teaching myself all the necesssary skills on how to steal Audis, and it was stupid easy.
