Engine Out

Sadly after 4 years and 50,000 miles of mainly trouble free motoring I'm now going to have the engine pulled due to the steering rack giving up the ghost and having a fatal seal failure.
I have two questions regarding the approximate Labour cost I can expect for the removal / fitment and other than a Turbo refurb what jobs are worth doing while the power plant is out?
As it's normally the engine oil pump that kills older power plants I'm thinking of replacing that also.

There's a few threads with some comprehensive lists of items worth changing whist the engine is out . Have a search and you'll find them .
With regards too labour figures I guess a lot depends on where your planning too get the work done as a stealer will be a lot more than an indie.
I'm sure it's around 14/15 hours for engine in and out book time . I could be wrong though . I don't have access to elsawin at the moment as I'm working. I'm sure someone will be close enough too check though

afaik you don't need an engine pull for rack replacement.

Who would be able to do it without as a few I know aren't sure whether an engine pull would be the quickest way and therefore cheaper on Labour.
Can you recommend somebody who has done it without an engine pull as I thought one bolt was buried in the heat shield.

14 hours ??

I wish lol

Just to give you an accurate Stealer price - my friend has just authorised Audi to remove the engine on his RS5 at a cost of £4400+vat just to remove for investigative work on why the engine failed.

A stealer price if I remember is £200 + VAT an hour. So that's 22 hours ish. 3 days solid work to pull an engine is diabolical.

A friend of mine has a motorsport garage so unless anybody can suggest somebody who can do it without pulling the engine then It will end up there.

If not another VW specialist I know will do it for £30 + VAT an hour. I didn't realise anybody would use the stealer for big jobs at their own expense as Coventry Audi admitted to me that they had no one who had even replaced a C5 RS6 cam belt let alone pulled an engine.

I thought 8 man hours on the job out and vice versa was reasonable. I guess not.

Not that it's comparable but in my day we would replace an AH64 ECU and have it ready for airtest in about 16 man hours in he U.K. In Afghan it would be far quicker. Lol

Probably more hassle than it's worth taking the car to Afghanistan though.

LOL

I know, my friends RS5 is being covered by Audi "goodwill" as its 1 day out of warranty, he bought it new and its done less than 10k miles and its looking like the engine has gone pop :audibash:

But their rules say the customer has to authorise the work if its out of warranty, even if they agree to cover it assuming theres nothing done by the customer to cause the fault - hence the potential 4.5k+ bill

Oh and when you take your car to your friends garage and see just how much Audi "package" the front end of these cars and how much needs stripping you'll start to see where the time goes lol :bash:

Lol, probably right.

Cheaper than a stealer though even sending it air freight both ways.

Any suggestions for a garage capable of removing the rack without pulling the engine.

Engine/gearbox out and back in is between 32-37 hours book time from Audi.

That's without any additional work while it's out.

As this is normally done because the gearbox needs work, you have to ask the question, what condition is your gearbox in? The refurbishment of the gearbox isn't all that expensive, it's getting it out and back in that eats up the hours.

A guy on RS6.com had figured out how to remove the rack without an engine pull, the Yanks called it the $1200 bolt due to the labour cost to get at it. If a DIYer Yank can figure it out I'm sure a decent UK tech can... without using a gas axe.

There's a lot of $1200 bolts on 'em.

Here we are. Had a look through the receipts box and found it. Recon rack £550, 8 hours labour. Big job but 8 hours labour only gets the engine out and that's if they've done plenty before.
Not very local to you but PSI Newcastle under Lyme did mine, £320 + tax labour....it was 3 years ago though so labour rate is probably increased but they know their stuff (mechanically anyway, no good for getting the most of the hybrids; MRC all the way for that 😊)

I can read the invoice,

But no way in Gods green earth did they remove and refit the engine and box in 8 hours lol
Deffo sounds like they are the people to see for a rack swap though :beerchug:
