Miles.....

Post by Mark-RS » Fri Apr 28, 2017 7:42 pm

Do they matter ?

Most of the ones I seem to see for sale of late have well over 100k miles. Most appear to have between 120 and 140k !

I was hoping to pick one up with around 70-80k on it, but they seem to be rarer than rocking horse :dung:

I'd be more worried about service history and if the gearbox has been done then low miles on these as we know the gearbox will go at some point

No need to be scared of big miles; as long as it's had the main issues addressed e.g. gearbox & DRC with regular oil/cambelt changes then it's just a number.

Would you rather a.) buy a 70k mile car on its original 'box with no evidence of all of the above having been carried out, or b.) one with double (or more) miles plus paperwork?

I know what i'd choose..
Current:
TT Mk1, 225 Quattro Misano Red, AmD map

Former:
RS6 Avant 2004, MRC Stage 1+, Bilstein Coilovers, Milltek & s/s downpipes
Saab 9000 Aero 1997, GT3071, Siemens Dekka 630s, Forge 50mm i/c, 3" downpipe, Maptun stainless header, Konis, Quaife lsd, a/c deleted, 4.05 ratio 'box, custom map, 470hp & 440lb/ft.
Saab 9-3 Aero Estate 2.8 v6 2006, 3" stainless downpipe & remap, 302hp & 380lb/ft.
Rouse Sport 304R Sapphire Cosworth 1990 (stock), 260hp & 300lb/ft.

100k is nothing for a car these days. It's weird that we're still hung up on it. But hung up we are and so is the market.

Good service history means more than mileage to me. Also, where it has been serviced is important.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

The only thing that worries me is I plan to actually drive the car and use it and if I buy one at 140k miles, it would be long before it's approaching silly miles...

If you use one that's already got high miles then it's not going to lose as much value as doing the same miles with a low mileage one. If it's already got 140k then you may as well fill your boots :)

How much is a 140k mile car selling for nowadays?

They seem to vary wildly. I have seen them for 8-9k but also as much as 12-13k

The lower value ones do tend to look a little more tatty though. Rough around the edges. Faded creased seats, worn buttons, scuffed wheels etc....

I always wonder how people manage to let their cars get so tatty. My 35 year old Rangey is tidier than most 8 years old BMWs I've seen.

Been away for a while - just passed 185K and still going strong - so that's over 100K since I bought it!

How many miles do you think you've done in an RS6 now then MrPerc?
