I wonder what Audi are charging for a box these days. If you can get a discount on one, then you'll get the 2 year warranty which is of some comfort. Still a ZF reman box, but with extra warranty.
From memory when I enquired 18 months ago it was around the £9000 mark. I'll give the girl on the phone her due, she was laughing too.

I thought my box was broken, displaying a lot of the symptoms commonly described on here. Businesses were quick to offer £4500 rebuilds. Instead I replaced a cracked pickup/filter and filled it with the correct amount of oil. Sorted.

Along with initial sealed for life servicing, incorrect oils, incorrect pickup filters, incorrectly done fill up procedures, failed valves, deteriorated wiring and failed sensors there is a myriad of reasons that could lead to a broken gearbox, or certainly the symptoms of one. A whole gearbox changeout is probably the fastest easiest way to solve it, not necessarily the cheapest.

Sure. Grizz will set him straight and if it's a simple fix then he'll do that. I think Carlson is looking at worst case scenarios.

I'm sure the reputable places will. The places I phoned I'm not sure how far into fault finding they'd go before ripping into a nice profitable gearbox change. My fault for living in a dodgy area :)

I think the reputable ones are the exception, unfortunately. For the cost of a 4.5k gearbox refurb, you're better off buying a 2 poster and the specialist tools to do the job yourself.

Yeah I'm prepping myself for worst case scenario but
I also know Grizz and trust him; I think there is a chance it's only the TC or the switch but my gearbox has been serviced twice in the last 5 years (40k miles) - once by Grizz at Unit 20 and once at MRC.

I only use MRC or Unit 20.

Having done due diligence on this forum when I joined I learned it would be cheaper in the long run to make the trips to them rather than trust anyone else on a C5 RS6.

Thanks for all the advice and comments everyone.

How vitally important is a Rebuild ? If the box has been well serviced, is it still a matter of when and not if, it will go ? And with over 100k on it ?

As with anything, it will fail at some point. Regular servicing can help ALOT, but gentle sensible driving will help the most.

Slushboxes are full of consumable friction material. When the consumables are consumed the party is over. This is true of all cars with slushboxes.

Hi guys,

My gearbox has been working smoothly and pretty well overall. It's done 60,000. But from time to time I get the infamous bang in to gear once the revs shoot up 3000-4000 rpm. Other than the odd times it does that, it works just fine.

I have this feeling that it could be time somehow.

I'm thinking of doing this Level 10 Bulletproof Transmission thing from the U.S. But is it a long drawn out purpose if I order it all and then have say Unit 20 or someone fit it?

How much do you think I'm looking at?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated guys :)

I think it might be best to work out where you'd have the car stripped first. Lets just say you use either Unit20 or MRC (other places are available), i'd call them and ask which company they use to rebuild their boxes (think MRC just fire in new boxes or get the customer to sort it out?). I'd then ring the company they use and ask them if they'd re-build using the supplied parts from level10. If they will then go ahead and get the parts.
Good luck and update the your findings, will help others in the future.

FON and rule 1 too.

My gearbox was rebuilt here apx 50k miles ago incl uograded converter. http://www.teomotors.pl

This was e few years ago, but the price for the complete job( box out and full refurb + box back in)
1500 Euro's.

Box is still in 100% good shapeImage
