I read through this thread and thought - hmm, it wasn't too bad when I did it. And then saw my comment up top where I called it a biatch of a job.
Mostly because of the arse puckeriness pulling the cams out. Oh, and the noncy colour nobby did the cam covers in. Satin Black powdercoat FTW.

I'm going for Black crinkle finish, not that you will see it once the airbox is on.

Yeah, black crinkle would work. It's magnesium, so inevitably will have corrosion marks that the crinkle will hide well.

You’ll be pleased to know that most of the paint has now come off. Painting magnesium isn’t so easy after all. Needs to be mega clean, corrosion less and then you might have a chance of it staying put.

I might polish them next time 8)

Hi there,

As the engine is currently out of the car (gearbox replacement), it's the good time to change those tensionners (160,000 kms here). However, as the OP rightly said, those are awfully expensive so I'm taking the pad+chain replacement route.

Problem is, I'm having a hard time to find the right parts : on eBay, every time I use the little utility that checks the compatibility with my car (RS6 Avant C5 2003), it says it won't fit, even if the title says it will  See here for instance: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/4x-Gleitschiene ... 1763900124

So would you mind sharing your sources (eBay or other) to get the right parts for our cars?

Many thanks!

IIRC, they're generic across all the V8s, so those ones you have linked to look correct

I would be so worried buying brandless parts for such a critical application.

Totally agree with you, however those tensioners are crazy expensive 700€ each! I can buy the chains at Audi (80€ each?) so at least this part is covered, but for those pads there must be a solution, or?

Hi Shoppinit, if the question is for me, yes the chains have been replaced (original), along with the pads, not the tensioners though, couldn't justify the 800€ expense each. Looks good so far, still need to be confirmed by the measurements.

Cool. What's your plan? Check the wear on the ebay runners after a few thousand miles? Did you get the ones you linked to in the end?

Thank you for the continued interest and support. Ideally yes, along with the measurements (if memory serves well this is block measure 90 or 93?). And yes those pads were the ones from eBay (seller cs-part-de).
Cheers
