ABS and ESP lights on
ABS and ESP lights on
So a bit of help please ,
The last couple of times I have taken the car out I have had an intermittent problem. For no apparent reason the ABS and ESP light come on and stay on. If I stop and turn the ignition off and back on it goes away . It's happened a couple of times.
I used a simple code reader ( not Vagcom) and it came up code 00287 which I believe is 'ABS wheel speed signal #3 (right rear) range performance G44'.
So what am I looking for ? Is there a specific component to check and if so where ( other than somewhere near the right rear wheel) is it.
All help gratefully received
Thanks

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
Lots of threads recently about this. Could be wheel sensor, but it's more likely to be a failing ABS unit. If you change the sensor and the fault remains, then it could be that.

Thanks Shop, will wait and see what the result is on that thread. Small but important point which is the right the drivers or passenger side?
Re: ABS and ESP lights on
The right of the car as if sat in the drivers seat.

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
So I assume this is it . Removed the bolt but doesn't seem to want to come off. Is this a brute force to encourage it or am I missing something?
Re: ABS and ESP lights on
It appears to be a biatch to persuade out judging by the Passat forums, but I haven't done it myself.

Thanks will give it a little tap then!
Re: ABS and ESP lights on
So no success getting the sensor out. Online vids suggest that removal by trashing the sensor is favourite . I didn't want to do this as it has only happened twice.
Circumstances are that I had to pretty much emergency stop ( on the way to its MOT)and the lights came on at that time. Switched off and they went away then no problem for a few drives until I was in stationary traffic for a while holding the car on the foot brake and whilst stationary they came on again. Once I was moving again and could stop I did and again switched off and cured.
After trying yesterday to remove the sensor involving a lot of tapping etc a lot of crud came out of the disc so I'm kinda hoping ( yeah I know 'dreamer') that perhaps it was contaminated ?
Went out today lots of different driving lots of bumpy roads lots of braking, no sign of any fault......................?

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
Fingers crossed then. Let's see if the fault comes back.
Pretty sure people on here have swapped their sensors, so might be worth pinging them on those other threads.

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
My fault is still persisting and my speed sensors luckily came out easily. I really do think it's the ABS unit now on mine.

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
Seems to be a common fault as they get to this age. As if we needed another £1000+ programmed failure.

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
There indeed seem to be a spate of those things going around at the moment.
The way AMD found the fault after checking the wheel speed sensors was to follow the loom and they noticed that the fault would come on when moving the loom close to the abs unit. Old fashioned technique. Unfortunately, the fault on mine was not a short in the loom.

Or send the electric module to ecutesting.com for about £200 and they will fix it and cover it with a lifetime warranty.

Re: ABS and ESP lights on
Are these people reputable? Unlike some other ABS repair people that have been mentioned?
