HI i am new to here but have a issue with my rs6

was driving home last night and all of a sudden had a vibration from the steering wheel when slowing down to a stop and the whining noise from the power steering.
carried on driving home and when i got faster the noise went, as soon as i got home the noise was still there. open bonnet and check the power steering fluid and it was low, top it up and the noise and vibration was there still. left the car for a bit and came back to and the noise was gone.

so to it for a drive was fine until i got near my house again and starting making the whining noise and vibration on the steering, like the power steering fluid was low.
once i got home check the fluid again it was very low not even showing on the dip stick and that was only over a 4 mile drive.

is my power steering pump on its way out?

is it a big job to do on these?

Thanks

Sounds like you got a leak somewhere in the system. You need to have a good proper look to find where it's leaking from.
Could be a pipe, the rack or yeah the pump it's self.

I think you can see the ends of the steering rack with the wheels on full lock - worth a try. I think someone else on this forum (Amanda?) had it leaking from the ends of the rack.

Almost certainly. I had the same symptoms and replacing it has cured the problem. My power steering also feels more responsive now (and quieter.) But do check the rack for signs of leaking as stated above.

Had it done privately by an Audi Master Tech who does my servicing. Not a big job i.e. engine doesn't have to come out etc. although he used a genuine Audi pump despite me suggesting pattern/remanufactured units. Ultimately your choice though.

Oh, I also tried some of this which initially stopped the leak (or so I thought), although it was just the cold weather thickening the fluid which is already very thick like treacle. Once it warmed up it started leaking quickly again.

Sounds like the rack, unless you are lucky and it's the pump. My rack was replaced last year.
