ABS & Traction control light stayed on.

Hi,
Probably only used the car twice in the last month but just went out for a couple of miles to blow out the cobwebs and stopped at the shops. After starting it back up noticed the above lights stayed on. Drove it a bit further and restarted it and they were on again and headed all the way back. Decided to to the self check button when I parked up on the drive and it took them off.
Needless to say I am happy it seems to have rectified but what would cause this and if they are now off do I need to worry? I did do a forum search but nothing seemed to be apparent..

Magic button. Awesome.
Sometimes they do come on for no reason and disappear after restarting, leaving no fault codes but a very tense sphincter.
Probably just an RS brain burp. Ignore it until it happens again.

I'll go for that. Thanks for the reassurance!

Lights still coming on so I will have to get it plugged in. Most people seem to say wheel sensors but I guess its better to find out for sure.

Had the same problem recently.
Fault indicated was the left front wheel sensor, so got that changed (quite expensive), but the problem came back so the car went to AMD who diagnosed a faulty ABS module by following the wiring harness and noticed that the lights were coming on and off when twisting it.
There were some fine wires broken inside the module so irrepairable.
A new ecu module/pump is £1600 IIRC.

Just had mine plugged in tonight code 000285 I think speed sensor front left as well. Cant believe it will be that big a job. How much is a new sensor itself?

The sensor itself is almost £200...
Test the wiring to the abs module, as I had exactly the same symptoms and I would have saved myself £300 odd for not replacing a probably working sensor.
As luck would have it, the gaiter on that side had split so there was grease all over which we thought would have hastened the sensor's demise.

That and labour, a bill not far off £2500....
I cannot say I was overly pleased.

Okay after reading this there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Do I mess around with sensors or just go for the ABS module? It came back to me that somebody at Audi thinks its unlikely to actually be the speed sensor and this seems to be supported by a few cases see here;

So I can either send mine away for the same cost as buying a new speed sensor and get a lifetime warranty

Or buy a replacement for less than half the price. There is a business near me that have them in stock or get one off ebay but theres no guarantee it will last but then again how frequently do they go? If its something like this its not too bad to change right?

Am I on the wrong track or not? I love this car and I spent an unexpected 3k plus on it last year I don't want to worry I am going to break it every time I take it out, its not meant to be hidden away I work hard to earn my money to run this car and tbh after going onto 5 years of ownership I want to make it to AITP and other car events and take my 19 month old son in it so he can remember it.

Swap the left sensor with the right and see if the problem stayed in the same place or moves. That will tell you if it's the sensor or not.
If it's the ABS module then have a search through here for a reputable repairer. Some people have doubts about the integrity of certain ones.
Check what their policy is if it turns out not to be repairable. Do they charge you a "testing" fee, etc.

Cheers Tom RS might see you at the Big Breakfast at Malton on Easter Sunday.
As nobody has a second hand ABS module it will cost about £200 to send to get fixed it but a £45 charge if found not faulty. I think this is acceptable so that a don't have go start switching sensors. I guess first off I better just have the wheel off for a gander as well as get the fault read again.
Out of interest has anyone removed just the circuit bit of the pump as in the video above?
I will let you know how I get on.

Well joys of joys the same speed sensor fault popped up and th whole host of other things that have happened inbetween. Cleared faults and only the speed sensor and a MAF sensor now remain as the engine management light is on. Is there actually a write up on removing these to either clean or replace? It appears to be missing from the sticky. I am going to check the sensors with a multimeter but now this whole maf thing is another job. Anyone got any pointers or advice? Would it help if I put the fault codes up?
