Help me get my car back...

Post by Rupert » Thu Mar 05, 2015 11:52 am

... on the road!

OK, the old dear has been sleeping in the garage for the last 2 years. It is in need of a gearbox and possible head gasket, I know that much. Cambelt will also need to be done after resting so long. What else should be replaced/inspected?

Replace:
1) Gearbox
2) Head gasket
3) Cambelt, aux belt, water pump, tensioners
4) Oil cooler pipes???
5) New discs and pads for front
6) ???

Inspect:
1) Tyres
2) ???

Thanks!

Depending on mileage, I'd also consider new seals & thrust washers & bearings in the turbos - they start to wear and whilst probably still serviceable, it's a load of ballache to take the engine out again. It's also much cheaper to refresh the turbos before they have a major failure.

Also worth considering the cam chain tensioner shoes while it's apart - low cost additional item to do, easy while the motor is out.

I'd be hoping not to touch the turbos as they have already been replaced less than 20k miles ago after a major failure :boohoo:

I'll add the tensioner shoes to the list, thanks!

Agreed on turbos, if they've been done. IMVHO, they have between 80 and 100k life before seals and thrust washers need doing - although many probably squeek further.
Are you DIYing, or paying a garage?

Suspension bushes will have gone flat, so get them replaced. Anything that has a seal would be a good bet to replace as well. Even the door seals will have gone a little bad after two years of being unused.

Why not drop the car off at MRC or Unit20, depending on where you are in the country and get them to complete a full health check. I'm sure with the amount of knowledge they have you'll have a fairly full list of things to get done in now time.

Also you'll need a full detail done on the paint work. Bring that shine back along with all the mechanical's.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Any photo guides would be most helpful I'm sure.

Thanks for the ideas... it has been garaged all its life, so it is still in very good condition.

I made the mistake of leaving the newish battery on charge (a normal charger) and of course forgot about it and fried it. It now has a new battery and surprisingly started first go. :)

I was going to try AMD, but maybe this requires a trip to MRC for a full check over. Hopefully a lot of the labour charges will be reduced because the gearbox will be out.

It pains me to even ask this, but any idea what it would be worth as is? Are there specialist breakers who would take the whole car (for more than £100 scrap value obviously!).

PM Jimbo on here, he may be interested in breaking the 6. Wouldbe a shame to part it though.

IMVHO, if you shop for a bargain you can get <100K miles examples for £7.5K. Of course, ones in tip top nick with gearbox already done are substantially more. The lowball I've seen - Dubbed up Daz's one last year for, I think 5.5K - it already had a new box, but needed the front lambdas doing and was missing some history, IIRC.

Ap_Autotech on ebay seem to break them - I've bought a few odds and sods off him and seems like a decent chap. There's actually a few individuals who are DIY breaking them, too.

Well it passed its MOT today, my first time driving the beast in 2 years and what a car! I had forgotten just how quick this car is even though I have been driving the 911 turbo in the meantime. Seems I have decided to keep her. :)

Drive mine over 4 miles for the first time in months last week and smiled lots, they are ace cars. Still, would change for a C7 if I was offered the chance, not a C6 though.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!
