gearbox/engine oil cooler aftermarket?

Post by Ecxoes » Tue Sep 09, 2014 10:45 am

Hi guys, the nasty piece of work that is the oil/gear oil cooler is requiring replacement! no doubt the pipes are a issue too.
has any body gone down the after market route? are there any implications fitting 2 separate coolers? the universal coolers are pretty cheap in comparison.
i ask because i read somewhere maybe on here that the 2 are combined to bring the gearbox up to engine oil temp? true? if this is the case could 2 be bolted together as alloy has a high heat transfer?
I'm loathed to spend the £840 (inc vat) on a genuine cooler.
or has anyone had the threads repaired on the original item?
the pipes i can get made up locally pretty easy.

I had mine down a few months back and kept the old one to try and repair, ive not had chance to nip to the hydraulics place to get a new weld nipple, but my fabricator reckons he can cut the old one off and weld a new one back on

No, but please keep updating with your progress. £840 is a stupid amount of money. :audibash:

Get one made up. Don't worry about the heat exchange function. That's for knob ends who don't let the car warm up before making demands on it.

Hi mate,

Have you made any progress on with the oil coooler? I also need a replacement one, so would be good to know how you get on.

Cheers.

Hi mate,

Did you source them your self? Where abouts are you based? I'm just about to buy a new oil cooler from Audi (£755 inc staff discount) but this looks a lot cheaper, how much did the two coolers cost you? Presumably one for engine and the other for gear box?

Can you give me a link to what you bought?

Fingers crossed, found an M16 weld on aluminium piece at Think Automotive - so long as the pipe seats properly we're laughin' like Budda. Will let you know...

Which coolers did you choose for the job pictured? If my idea goes pear shaped, I'd been told the engine is 60' and the gearbox 40' split in the original cooler but those shown are equal width and frickin' tall. Did it all work out?
