Upgrading my knob

Morning all,

My poor knob is well past its best. 85,000 miles of various people's sweaty hands on it have made it all worn and shiny. :-(

After reading somewhere on the web that the C6 RS6 knob will fit the C5 with a little modification, I now have one ready to fit that will match nicely the new steering wheel I have just had fitted. The challenge is, I can't seem to work out how to remove the current one. I've been told that you need to slide the silver sleeve at the bottom down, then pull out the silver button on the side and lift up. However for the life of me I can't get the silver sleeve to slide down, and don't want to force it for risk of breaking it.

Has anyone removed theirs? Is there a technique to it? Any tips appreciated.

Cheers
D

You need to put the knob in D or N first. Can't remember which.

Also, make sure you put a cable tie behind the knob. If it pops back in, you're not getting it out again without destroying it.

Yup, bang on as usual, but the silver thing should cone down in any position ( I think )

So - I managed to pull the silver thing down eventually. Initially tried some mole grips wrapped in cloth but hadn't released how weak the material was that the sleeve was made from, so have managed to scratch/dent it.

And then after trying the new knob and needing to make more modifications to the base of it, I pulled it off with such vigour that I wasn't able to stop the silver knob on the side popping into the body in time.

Clearly should have outsourced this task....

So, for the benefit of anyone else who may suffer a similar bout of technical incompetence, I have at least managed to solve the issue of the silver knob popping back into the body of the stick. The solution? A kids' toothbrush. The sort with a small sucker on the end for attaching it to the sink. Just managed to generate enough suction to pull it out far enough to get a grip on it with my fingers.

Now just need to source a new silver sleeve thing...

Wow, I think that has just landed you on a paedophile register, somewhere. Now that I've quoted it I might be tarred (spelling?) with the same brush. Right, I'm off to sort that out now. Best of luck Dunk.
