i am impressed with the numbers on stock exhaust manifolds. perhaps the sportec package with its longer duration exhaust cam profiles keeps exhaust gas flowing in them for longer effectively getting around the bottle neck seen on stock cams

Torque is limited in 1st and 2nd. It's the 3rd gear synchro that's borked, it's probably running the old brass jobbies. There are loads of kits available, even in London! It's just finding someone that can do it properly that's difficult. I'd also like to strengthen other bits in the box too, need to do more research and get a list of priorities.

The kevlar versions of the clutches I'm looking at should 'feel' OE but I'd doubt they'd last very long in slip mode. It wouldn't be so bad if the turbos weren't wrapped around the gearbox, meaning that every time that I want to change a clutch the whole lot has gotta come out. So, ideally I'd like to get it right, however, even if I do get it right, these new clutches will hold ALL the torque, so no doubt it'll just start breaking other bits on the drivetrain.

Square one.

Yeah, I'm looking for a spare gearbox for a swap out.

I have an RS4 box from a B7. Not an 01E though.
If you ever want to sell the car I’d be interested FYI.

I’ve just had a reply back from MTM Germany regarding the Gearbox conversion... they said:-

Dear Ben,

thank you for your email.

For this conversion we used a S6 4,2 gearbox and short engine and re-built it to a Biturbo engine.

The conversion was unique, so there's no guide or manual available to built this again.

BR from Germany!

Frankensix. I think that's what Dyna thingumy (can't remember their name) did. Sportec were a better approach, I think.

I wonder what similarities there are on the
Short engines?

I seem to remeber the 01e box has a very short first gear, that would drive me nuts...

There's a surprising range of ratios available in both the 01e and 01x. I have an 01x and it'll give a 37mph top speed @ 6600rpm in 1st. I do find on manual boxes with bigger motors I regularly skip 1st completely when pulling away.

And a nifty optical illusion. I like how the red line looks like it's sloping down.

To do the conversion is pretty easy imo. You do need to change the crank to an S6 item to give you flywheel options. An RS4 item would work. Now you can use the S6 block and mate it with the RS6 rods and pistons or drill and tap the original RS6 block. I think there’s one hole you can’t drill as it goes into a water way but it’s easy to see. I can dig out which specific starter you’d need as I have it written down.

S6 had manual options so has the bolt holes for the transmission case as well as the crank allows for a conventional flywheel and clutch. ANK crank if my memory serves correctly.

RS6 doesn’t have the above.

Other wise identical.

I’ll be running an rebuilt OA3 box once my engine is rebuilt along with the clutch from an RS4.
